August 2, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers beat the River Bandits 11-3 to break a seven game losing streak. Brock Kjeldgaard had three hits and scored three runs. Erik Miller also scored three runs. Juan Sanchez and Sean McCraw each had two RBI.

AN EVEN DOZEN: Rattlers starting pitcher Daniel Meadows was the winning pitcher last night. He allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings and walked one while striking out six. Meadows has 12 wins on the season and is tied with JonMichael Redding of the Great Lakes Loons for the Midwest League lead in that category.

SHAKY START: Osvaldo Morales hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the first inning to give the Bandits a lead. Morales has homered in the first inning of both games in this series.

REBOUND: The Rattlers scored three times in the bottom of the second inning. McCraw drove in the first run by drawing a bases loaded walk. A throwing error on shortstop Jose Garcia after a grounder by Juan Sanchez allowed two runs to score.

CROOKED NUMBERS: During the just ended seven-game losing streak, the Rattlers scored more than one run in an inning twice. Last night the Rattlers scored three in the second, two in the fourth, two in the sixth, and four in the eighth.

GREAT WITH EIGHT: Brett Lawrie singled in his final at bat last night to run his hitting streak to eight games. Lawrie is 10-for-31 (.323) during his career high hitting streak.

A NOTE ABOUT ATTENDANCE: The attendance last night was 4,586 to bump Wisconsin’s home attendance to 182,789 for an average of 3,515. There are 16 home games remaining on the schedule. The single season attendance record for Wisconsin was set in 1996 with a mark of 233,797. If the Timber Rattlers hit their average attendance over the final 16 games of the season, that will give them 56,240 more fans for a total of 239,029.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Quad Cities River Bandits are the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The River Bandits missed the playoffs in the first half with a record of 30-40. In the second half of the season, Quad Cities is 15-19 and they trail Peoria by four games for the top second half playoff spot in the Western Division. The River Bandits trail Clinton LumberKings for the second half Western Division Wild Card spot by a game.

SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin is 4-5 against Quad Cities this season. The Rattlers swept a three game series against the River Bandits at Time Warner Cable Field to open the 2009 season. Quad Cities swept a four game series from the Wisconsin at Modern Woodmen Park April 25 through April 28. Today is the final meeting of the season between the Rattlers and the River Bandits.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .238 as a team. They have scored 419 runs (4.0/game) and hit 49 home runs. The River Bandits are hitting .241 as a team. They have scored 438 runs (4.2/game) and hit 53 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.24 while allowing a total of 514 runs (4.9/game). Quad Cities pitchers have a team ERA of 4.59 while allowing 538 runs (5.2/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 123 errors. The River Bandits defense has committed 146 errors. Wisconsin is 32-23 at home this season. Quad Cities is 14-37 on the road this season.

QUAD CITIES STARTING PITCHER: RHP Miguel Tapia was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic by the Cardinals in 2006. He was 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA for Batavia in the New York-Penn League last season. Tapia made 15 appearances (nine starts) for the Muckdogs. In his start prior to this afternoon, Tapia got a no decision against the Great Lakes Loons on July 27 at Modern Woodmen Park. Tapia allowed five runs on seven hits over four innings. Tapia faced the Timber Rattlers as a reliever on April 10 at Time Warner Cable Field. In that game, he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits over two innings. Tapia struck out three, walked one, and was not involved in the decision.
