August 4, 2009: Game notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers lost 5-1 to the Cougars in game one of a four game series. The Cougars scored twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. Wisconsin scored a run in the sixth on a double by Jose Duran, but the Rattlers were held off the board the rest of the way. Kane County tacked on a run in the ninth.

EQUAL HERE: Both teams had nine hits. Both teams had an error. Both teams had a runner thrown out at the plate. Both teams turned a double play.

NOT EQUAL HERE: Three Timber Rattlers pitchers walked four Cougars batters. Four Kane County pitchers walked one Wisconsin hitter.

YEAH, ABOUT THOSE WALKS: Wisconsin’s pitching staff has issued 417 walks this season. Dayton’s hurlers are second in the league in walks allowed with 399.

SEIDEL’S NIGHT: Rattlers starting pitcher RJ Seidel pitched four scoreless innings, but gave up two runs in the fifth to be charged with the loss. Duty Napoloeon’s double and an error on the play allowed catcher Petey Paramore to score from first. Then, Seidel uncorked a pair of wild pitches that allowed Paramore to take third and score for the 2-0 Kane County lead.

TWO by TWO by TWO: Brock Kjeldgaard, Brett Lawrie, and Michael Vass each had two hits last night. Lawrie has 21 multi-hit games this season.

BROCK: Kjeldgaard is on a brief three game hitting streak, but he is 6-for-12 in those three games.

LOW TIDE: Wisconsin’s overall record sits at 48-58 for the 2009 season. The 10 games under .500 mark is the farthest Wisconsin has been below .500 this season.

A NOTE ABOUT ATTENDANCE: The attendance on Monday was 2,044 to bump Wisconsin’s home attendance to 188,363 for an average of 3,488. There are 14 home games remaining on the schedule. The single season attendance record for Wisconsin was set in 1996 with a mark of 233,797. If the Timber Rattlers hit their average attendance over the final 14 games of the season, that will give them 48,832 more fans for a total of 237,195.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The Cougars are in the Midwest League playoffs as the first half champions of the Western Division. They were 43-29 in the first half. So far in the second half, Kane County is 17-20. In their most recent series, they lost the final two games of a three game series at Lansing.

SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin is 6-6 against Kane County this season, including a 3-2 record at Time Warner Cable Field. Wisconsin was 1-2 in a three game series at Kane County May 20-22. The Rattlers won three of four from Kane County in Grand Chute from June 10-13. The teams split a series at Elfstrom Stadium June 18-21.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .239 as a team. They have scored 423 runs (4.0/game) and hit 49 home runs. The Cougars are hitting .244 as a team. They have scored 481 runs (4.5/game) and hit 69 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.24 while allowing a total of 524 runs (4.9/game). KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: RHP Shawn Haviland was selected by Oakland in the 33rd round of the 2008 draft out of Harvard. He went 2-6 with two saves and an ERA of 5.46 in 13 games (8 starts) in his final year with the Crimson. Haviland was 2-3 with a 3.48ERA and 61 strikeouts in 54-1/3 innings over 18 innings (9 starts) for Vancouver in the Northwest League in 2008. Tonight is the fourth time Haviland will face the Timber Rattlers this season. In his previous three games – all starts – against Wisconsin, Haviland is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA. In 18 innings vs. Wisconsin, Haviland has wallowed six runs (five earned) on 13 hits with six walks and 15 strikeouts. Haviland’s start prior to this evening was a game at Cedar Rapids on July 30. He gave up four runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts over seven innings, but took the loss. Haviland, a Midwest League All-Star this season, has lost his last five decisions and is 1-5 with an ERA of 6.00 since the start of the second half.
