Steve Scarsone, the 12th manager in franchise history, is in his first season with the Oakland organization and third as a professional coach. Originally drafted by the Phillies in the 2nd round in ’86, Scarsone played in 350 games over seven seasons as an infielder in the major leagues, mostly with the Giants (’93-’96) but also the Phillies (’92), Orioles (’92), Cardinals (’97) and Royals (’99). He played six full seasons in the minors before making his MLB debut May 12, 1992, with Philadelphia. He retired after the ’99
season and in ’01 made his coaching debut as a manager in the Midwest League with South Bend, going 70-66 and leading the Silver Hawks to the LCS where they lost to the Cougars, 1 game to none, in a series shortened by the Sept. 11 attacks. Then in ’02 Scarsone managed the Lancaster JetHawks, Arizona’s High-A affiliate in the California League.
