July 8, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers and the Burlington Bees had their game suspended with the score tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning.

A HARD RAIN: Tuesday’s game was played in a steady drizzle from the second inning. Play was halted in the sixth after Jose Duran was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The rain started falling harder and the umpiring crew called for the tarp. After a delay of about 45 minutes, the game was suspended.

PICK IT UP WHEN? The Rattlers go back to Burlington August 24 through August 27. The suspended game will be restarted at 6:00pm on Tuesday August 25.

HOW WAS IT GOING? The Rattlers grabbed an early 1-0 lead on an RBI grounder by Martin Maldonado in the second inning. Burlington tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a solo homer by Juan Rivera.

MERKLINGER IN THE RAIN: Dan Merklinger was the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. He retired the first eight batters of the game before allowing the homer to Rivera. On the evening, Merklinger allowed three hits and struck out five without issuing a walk.

PAYBACK: On Monday night, the Timber Rattlers had three runners picked off first base. On Tuesday, Maldonado picked a Burlington runner off first in a crucial situation. A pair of errors and a single put runners at first and third with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. Merklinger got the second out on a popup to keep the game tied. Then, Maldonado took an outside pitch to the batter and fired to first to pick Nick Francis off to end the inning and keep the game tied 1-1.
