as in Triple Play...I have never seen one before and I didn't call this one very well. I think that it is a pretty good bet that the worst call of a triple play is going to be posted on MinorLeagueBaseball.com in the morning, if they got it that is (more in a minute)
Here's the thing:
The Rattlers fell behind 5-0 in the first inning. Paul Fagan had a rough go of it on his 21st birthday. He loaded the bases on an infield single (that was just a routine grounder to short) a walk and a hit batsman. A second hit batsman force one run in and a pair of two-run singles later in the inning made it 5-0.
It was 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Rattlers got the first two batters on base....Ah, heck, here is the log from MinorLeagueBaseball.com
Wisconsin Bottom 6th
Michael Saunders singles on a ground ball to right
fielder Warner A. Madrigal.
Bryan Sabatella walks. Michael Saunders to 2nd.
Jeffrey Flaig grounds into a triple play, shortstop Hainley Statia to second
baseman Ryan Leahy to first baseman Dallas Morris. Michael Saunders out at 3rd.
Bryan Sabatella out at 2nd.
Flaig sent a low line drive to short. From the booth it looked like Statia caught the ball and flipped to second to double Saunders off second. I thought the throw to first by Leahy was to try and double off Sabatella, who was going back because he thought the ball had been caught before it hit the ground.
The base umpire did not make an immediate and definitive call. That led to confusion for the Rattlers, but not for the Kernels.
Statia actually trapped the ball, tagged out Saunders and threw to second for the force on Sabatella. Then, Leahy threw to first to get Flaig for the triple play.
Inning over and that was pretty much the game.
