Game Notes for 4/20

ABOUT YESTERDAY: The Rattlers rallied from a 3-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth and a pair of runs in the ninth for a 4-3 win over the Devil Rays. The victory broke Wisconsin’s five-game losing streak. The winning runs in the bottom of the ninth scored on a two-out throwing error.

WINNING RALLY: The Rattlers trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Eddy Hernandez was hit by a pitch with one out by Aaron Walker. Then, pinch hitter JB Tucker drew a walk against Greg Dupas. Dupas got Wu to send a grounder to second for a potential game ending double play. But, Tucker broke up the double play at second. Alex Gary pinch ran for Wu. Bryan Sabatella sent a grounder behind third and Matt Devins threw wildly to first. Both Hernandez and Gary scored and the Rattlers won.

DÉJÀ VU: Dupas also blew a save in Southwest Michigan’s 4-3 ten-inning win on Monday night.

FIRST-TIMERS: The Rattlers recorded a few firsts yesterday. It was their first win when the opponents scored first; their first “walk-off” win; and their first win in a game decided by one run.

SPOILING: Southwest Michigan starter Wade Davis gave up one hit in six innings and struck out seven. The only hit that he allowed was a two-out single by Chao Kuan Wu in the bottom of the fifth inning.

HE WALKS THE LINE: Luis Valbuena walked three times against Davis yesterday. Valbuena was the only Rattler – other than Wu – to reach base.

RISP WOES: Wisconsin went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position yesterday. In the series with the Devil Rays, the Rattlers are 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position. Both hits belong to Valbuena. For the season, Wisconsin is 19-for-107 (.178) with runners in scoring position.

GOING FOR TWO: If the Rattlers can win tonight, it will be their first winning streak of the season.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Greg Reinhard is a native of Marinette, Wisconsin and pitched for the NCAA Division III Champion Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks before being drafted by Tampa Bay. He was named the NCAA Division III Pitcher of the Year for 2005 after going 11-0 with a 1.43 ERA heading into the D-III World Series with the Warhawks. He won his only start of the tournament to go a perfect 12-0 in his final season at UW-Whitewater. In his last start for Southwest Michigan, Reinhard got a no decision at West Michigan on April 14. He pitched 5-2/3 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
