Game Notes for 4/21

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers scored a season high 14 runs, hammered out 10 hits, and drew 12 walks in a 14-3 win over the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays at Fox Cities Stadium. Marwin Vega gave up two runs on three hits in 6-1/3 innings and struck out six for the win. Alex Gary, Luis Valbuena, and J.B. Tucker each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI in the win for the Rattlers.

0-FOR NO MORE: The Timber Rattlers were 0-for-12 with the bases loaded this season until Valbuena delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning last night. Moments later, Tucker singled in a pair of runs with the bases loaded. Wisconsin is now 2-for-17 with the sacks full this season.

RALLY TIME: All seven of the runs scored by the Rattlers in the bottom of the fourth came after there were two outs. Valbuena and Tucker had two-run singles, there was a run scoring wild pitch, an RBI single by Eddy Hernandez, and another run scored on an error.

PATIENCE AT THE PLATE: Twelve walks is also a season high for the Rattlers. Devil Ray starter Greg Reinhard walked four. Drew Bigda also walked four. Chris Kelly walked three. Third baseman Ryan Bethel pitched a scoreless ninth and walked one.

GONE FOR GARY: Gary slammed his first Midwest League homer last night. It was a two-run homer to center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

IT’S A STREAK: The Rattlers have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

PITCHING, DON’T FORGET THE PITCHING: Vega allowed two runs on two hits in the first inning. After an RBI single by Garrett Groce in the first, Vega didn’t allow another hit until Groce had a lead off single in the top of the seventh.


STRIKING OUT THE SIDE: Rattler reliever Harold Williams struck out the side in order in the top of the eighth inning. This season, Williams has K’ed 17 opponents in 8-1/3 innings.


ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are the defending Midwest League Champions. The Hawks are managed by Mark Haley, who is in his second season as the skipper of the Silver Hawks. South Bend is 5-9 to start the 2006 season. In their last series, the Silver Hawks were swept in four straight at Kane County. South Bend has lost five straight.

VS. SILVER HAWKS IN ’05: The Rattlers and Silver Hawks split eight games in the regular season last year. Wisconsin went 2-2 at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium in the regular season. Wisconsin and South Bend met in the Midwest League Championship Series. The Rattlers dropped the first two games of the series at ‘The Cove’ and won the next to games at Fox Cities Stadium. The Silver Hawks won Game Five 4-0.

PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA puts no members of the current Silver Hawk roster on their Top 30 list of Diamondback prospects. There are eight members of the 2005 Diamondback draft class on the Silver Hawk Roster. Justin Upton was selected with the number one pick in the 2005 June draft out of Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He will be making his professional debut during this series. Other members of the ’05 draft class are: Anthony Cupps (7th), Ryan Schreppel (8th), Cody Evans (10th), Bryan Byrne (12th), Greg Thomson (5th), Kyle Wright (19th), and Vincent Bongiovanni (24th).

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Ryan Schreppel was selected by the Diamondbacks in the 8th round of the 2005 draft out of Cal State Fullerton. At CSFU, Schreppel was 6-1 with a 1.92ERA. In his first season as a pro, Schreppel went 2-2 with a 3.35 ERA for the Yakima Bears of the Northwest League. He got a no decision in his last start. On April 15, at Lansing, Schreppel allowed one run on four hits in five innings and struck out five. He faced Everett twice (one start) last season in the Northwest League and went 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA.


RE/MAX HOME RUNS: RE/MAX Valley Realtors will donate $25 to the Children’s Miracle Network for every Rattler home run in the regular season. The total for 2006 is $150.
