Last night's Rattler of the day is Joe Pineiro (WI '98)
The right hander tossed 6-1/3 innings to help th Mariners to their first win of the season. Pineiro gave up seven hits and three runs (all in the sixth) in the 10-8 win at Seattle over the Angels.
Former Rattlers also contributing to the victory were Rafael Soriano and JJ Putz. (Note: Hey, mlb.com, Soriano and JJ have been regulars with the Mariners for awhile now. How about pictures of them on their player pages?)
Pineiro was a member of the 1998 Timber Rattlers. That pitching staff had an amazing amount of talent for the Midwest League. Pineiro, Gil Meche, Allan Simpson, Lesli Brea, and Justin Kaye all made the majors. Plus, Ryan Anderson -- before the arm problems -- was on that team. That year's staff struck out 1274 opponents (9.1/game)
In just over half a season at Fox Cities Stadium, Pineiro was 8-4 with a 3.19ERA. On July 13 of that year he was promoted to Lancaster in the High-A California League. On September 6, he went to AA Orlando in the Southern League.
