ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers and Kernels split a doubleheader. Wisconsin won game one 5-3. Cedar Rapids took game two 4-1.
GAME ONE RECAP: Ron Garth and Eddy Hernandez both homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Rattler offense. Marwin Vega allowed three runs over five innings for his first win since July 8. Austin Bibens-Dirkx worked the final two innings and got out of a bases loaded two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh for his third save.
GAME TWO RECAP: The Kernels scored four runs (three unearned) off Rattler starting pitcher Paul Fagan for the win. Curt Ledbetter hit a two-out solo homer in the top of the seventh inning to spoil the shutout bid. Brok Butcher got the win with five shutout innings.
POWER SURGE: The Rattlers have hit eleven home runs in their last ten games. Garth’s homer last night was his team leading eighth of the season. Ledbetter’s homer was the second he has hit in his last three games.
MORE NEW OUTFIELDERS: Gerardo Avila started game one of the doubleheader in left field. Johan Limonta started both games in right field. Avila became the tenth different starting left fielder for the Rattlers this season. Limonta became the fifth different starting right fielder for Wisconsin this season.
NO PROBLEM: Avila did not let the new surroundings get to him in game one. He went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the opener.
MOORE, PLEASE: Adam Moore was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader. Moore has at least one hit in eleven of his last twelve games. He is 17-for-48 (.354) in his last twelve games.
TOUGH LOSS: Fagan did not walk a batter and saw his ERA drop to 5.19 over five innings in the game two loss last night. The loss was his thirteenth of the season. Fagan is now tied with Jake Rasner of Clinton for the Midwest League lead in losses.
SPLITSVILLE: Last night was the sixth doubleheader of the season for the Rattlers. Wisconsin has split five doubleheaders and was swept in the other twinbill this season.
OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Tommy Mendoza was a fifth round pick of the Angels in the 2005 draft out of Monsignor Pace High School of Miami, Florida. Las season, Mendoza went 3-3 with a 1.55ERA for the Angels Arizona League affiliate. In thirteen games (four starts), he struck out 56 batters in 52-1/3 innings. At the end of the 2005 season, Mendoza made two appearances (one start) against Inland Empire, Seattle’s California League affiliate, for Rancho Cucamonga. In those two outings he pitched ten scoreless innings, allowed four hits, struck out twelve, and picked up a save and a win. His last outing was a no decision against the Lansing Lugnuts at Veterans Memorial Stadium on August 5. In that game, Mendoza allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers.
