Game Notes for 8/13

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Kernels beat the Rattlers 9-3. Jordan Renz drove in three runs for Cedar Rapids. Tommy Mendoza picked up his ninth win of the season by scattering nine hits over seven innings.

MEET JOHNNY ALLSTAFF: Seven Timber Rattler pitchers made an appearance of at least one inning last night. Starter Lance Beus went 1-1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits for the loss. Roman Martinez entered with one out in the second and gave up a two run single, but worked scoreless ball for his remaining 1-2/3 innings. Nick Allen, Ruben Flores, Juan Colon, and Brian Kappel all worked a scoreless inning last night. Cory Koliscak pitched the seventh and allowed two runs.

POWER SURGE CONTINUES: The Rattlers hit two more home runs last night. Ron Garth’s two-out solo blast in the first gave the Rattlers a brief 1-0 lead. The homer was Garth’s team leading ninth of the year. Johan Limonta hit his fifth homer of the season in the top of the sixth inning. Wisconsin has hit thirteen homers in their last eleven games.

THREE FOR THEE: Limonta had a 3-for-3 night with a walk mixed in for good measure.

STILL GOING UP: Rattler catcher Adam Moore continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 night. His batting average is up to .291 from the .208 before he has collected at least one hit in 12 of his last 13 games.

IN A PINCH: Curt Ledbetter had a pinch hit single in the top of the ninth inning. Timber Rattler pinch hitters are 2-for-11 this season.

RUNNING WILD: The Kernels stole six bases in the game last night. They have 177 stolen bases this season and lead the Midwest League in that category. Burlington is second in the MWL with 135. Cedar Rapids runners have been caught 99 times this season. That also leads the league.

BACK-TO-BACK JACKS: The game was tied 1-1 with two out in the bottom of the first inning. Dallas Morris hit a two-run homer and Mark Trumbo followed with another home run to give the Kernels a 4-1 lead.

ALMOST HISTORY (AGAIN): On April 13 of this season at Fox Cities Stadium, the Kernels turned a triple play on the Rattlers. They almost turned three again last night. In the second inning, Moore and Limonta started the inning with singles. Robby Hudson was next and sent a hard grounder to third. Morris, who was playing near the bag in case of a bunt, stepped on third, threw to second for the out there. Hudson beat the relay to first by half a step to avoid the triple play.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Robert Mosebach was a ninth round pick of the Angels in the 2005 draft out of Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida. He spent last season with Orem in the Pioneer League and was 3-3 with a 4.57ERA in fifteen appearances (thirteen starts). If he picks up one more win this season, he could become the third Cedar Rapids pitcher this season with ten wins. Mosebach is 1-0 in two starts against the Rattlers this season. He has pitched a total of 9-2/3 innings and given up five runs (two earned) on ten hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Mosebach got the win against Lansing in his last start, an August 8 outing. In that game he scattered ten hits over six innings and allowed only two runs.
