ABOUT SUNDAY: The Dragons beat the Rattlers 8-7. Wisconsin went up 5-0 with three runs in the first and two runs in the second. But, the Dragons scored a run in the third and six in the fourth to go up 7-5. Wisconsin was down 8-5 heading into the top of the eighth, but scored twice to pull to within 8-7. The Rattlers put runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but could not score the tying or go ahead run.
SEARCHING FOR CARLOS FISCHER: Dayton starting pitcher Carlos Fischer allowed three runs on three hits in the first inning and two runs on two hits in the second inning. In the third, Fischer gave up a one-out single to Eddy Hernandez then proceeded to retire the next fourteen batters in a row. He also struck out nine and walked just one in the game.
NOT A DOUBLE: Rattler third baseman Jeff Flaig tripled in the top of the second yesterday. It was his first extra base hit of the season that was not a double this season. Flaig now has twenty doubles and a triple on the season.
ALLEN’S START: Rattler starting pitcher Nick Allen retired the first six batters he faced in the game on Sunday. But, he left with an injury after Craig Tatum reached on a single to lead off the third inning.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE: Rattler relievers Roman Martinez and Edgar Guaramato each hit two batters in the game yesterday. Guaramato entered the game in relief of Martinez with the bases loaded, one out, and the Rattlers up 5-3. Guaramato hit the first two batters he faced to force in the tying runs.
YES, YOU SAW THAT RIGHT: Tatum was retired 6-4-6-3 on a groundout in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tatum hit a sharp grounder near the second base bag to short stop Robby Hudson. The ball deflected high in the air to second baseman Ron Garth and caromed back to Hudson. The throw to first just beat Tatum for the unusual putout.
IT’S OFFICIAL: Beloit and Quad Cities both won yesterday. Those wins coupled with the Rattler loss officially eliminated the Rattlers from playoff contention. Wisconsin trails Quad Cities by 15-1/2 games and Beloit by fifteen games. There are thirteen games remaining in the 2006 season.
OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Daniel Guerrero was signed by the Reds as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela in March of 2005. Guerrero pitched for the VSL Reds in 2005 and went 2-1 with a 3.08ERA in fourteen games (six starts). Guerrero made one appearance for the Reds Florida State League team in Sarasota on May 26 and went one scoreless inning. In June, he made a pair of starts for Billings in the Pioneer League and won both before being promoted to Dayton and making his Dragon debut on June 30. In his last start, Guerrero allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings and was tagged with the loss at Fort Wayne on August 16. In that game, Guerrero did not walk a batter and struck out two. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers.
