OAKLAND, Calif. — Eric O'Flaherty's big-league visit was too short to qualify as a cup of coffee.
O'Flaherty is a minor-league pitcher who is left-handed. He was in the Mariners' clubhouse only for an afternoon Tuesday, and he was gone without ever suiting up for a game.
O'Flaherty was flown in from Class AAA Tacoma because there was consideration of putting reliever Rafael Soriano on the disabled list.
"We wanted to get someone in here if we did," manager Mike Hargrove said. "We decided not to."
...
The decision to keep Soriano on the active roster left O'Flaherty with no place to go but back to Tacoma. He was on the field at the beginning of workouts, and Hargrove said by the time the game began, O'Flaherty would be out of uniform and watching the game in the stands or back at the team's hotel.

Mark Lowe's attire headed into the bullpen is pink, and his results out of the pen have been completely pretty.
Lowe is the right-handed reliever who hasn't been charged with a run in the 17-2/3 innings he has pitched. He's also the rookie who was given a pink backpack with toy dolls on it by reliever Julio Mateo, and Lowe must wear it to the bullpen before every game.
Lowe pitched two scoreless innings on Monday, and his fastest pitch was against the first batter he faced, Marco Scutaro. That pitch was gauged at 101 mph on the scoreboard in Oakland, the second time he has reached triple figures since coming to the Mariners. He was clocked at 102 in Baltimore.
Rattlers' Minaker stays red-hot:
Christopher Minaker continued his torrid hitting with a second straight 4-for-4 performance Tuesday night as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Peoria Chiefs, 5-2.
Minaker singled in the first, third and seventh innings and doubled in the fourth. He is 10-for-10 with a sacrifice fly dating to his final two at-bats on Sunday, boosting his batting average to .314.
The 22-year-old shortstop has hit safely in seven consecutive plate appearances, three shy of the Midwest League record set by Fort Wayne's Rene Lopez in 1993.
Hochevar Arrives at "The Hive":
The Kansas City Royals have assigned RHP Luke Hochevar to the Burlington Bees active roster. The Royals selected Hochevar with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 June Free Agent Draft. Hochevar will make his affiliated pro debut on Wednesday night in game three of the Bees' current series against the South Bend Silver Hawks at Community Field.
Butler, Wood Lead U.S. Olympic Qualifying Roster:
USA Baseball revealed its first 24-man roster for the Olympic qualifying tournament scheduled to begin Aug. 25 in Cuba, a roster featuring an intriguing mix of prospects and minor league veterans that should make the U.S. a strong favorite to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Team USA's roster includes several of the game's top prospects, including righthander Nick Adenhart (Angels), the team's top power arm among starting pitchers, as well as pitching prospects Kevin Slowey (Twins), Zach Segovia (Phillies), Heath Phillips (White Sox) and Greg Smith (Diamondbacks) mixed with veterans such as Nic Ungs (Marlins) and Mike Bacsik (Diamondbacks).
...
The team's lineup figures to have a similar veteran-prospect mix, with a deep catching corps that includes Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Braves) and Kurt Suzuki (Athletics), as well as Matt Tupman (Royals). The infielders include first baseman Bryan LaHair (Mariners/ed. Rattlers 2004), who has played on Team USA's two pro rosters in 2005, and third baseman Mike Kinkade (Marlins), who was the starting third baseman on Team USA's 2000 gold-medal winners in Sydney, Australia. At 33, Kinkade is the oldest player on the roster.
