Game Notes for 8/26

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The LumberKings won the completion of the suspended game from Thursday night 7-4. John Mayberry homered and had three RBI for the LumberKings offense. The Rattlers won the regularly scheduled game with a 1-0 victory on Curt Ledbetter’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth.

TOO FAR BACK: Clinton had a 2-0 lead when play was suspended on Thursday night and they ran that lead out to a 6-0 advantage before the Rattler bats got going. Mayberry’s homer in the sixth made it 3-0 and Clinton added three runs in the seventh. Wisconsin got to within 6-4 and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, but Jose Marte entered the game and closed out the victory for JB Diaz.

SOMETHING YOU DON’T SEE EVERY DAY: Rattler reliever Ruben Flores entered the game as it restarted with an 0-1 count on Chris Kemp; one out; and nobody on base. Flores threw five pitches in the inning and got credit for two strikeouts as he K-ed Kemp with two pitches and Ian Gac on three straight.

DEFINITION OF TOUGH LUCK LOSER: Jake Rasner was Clinton’s starting pitcher in the regularly scheduled game. In his first seven innings, Rasner did not give up a hit and had allowed only two base runners – on an error and a walk. Rasner struck out six, but allowed Lebetter’s game winning homer in the eighth and saw his record drop to 5-16.

THREE OF A KIND: Ledbetter’s game winning homer was the third walk-off home run for the Rattlers this season. Ron Garth hit one as a pinch-hitter in the eleventh inning against Burlington on May 21. Johan Limonta hit the other in the bottom of the ninth against Beloit on August 6.

ASHER HIGHS: David Asher was the starter for Wisconsin in the regularly scheduled game. He matched his career high for innings pitched with seven and set a new career high for strikeouts with six.

KAPPEL KEEPS WINNING: Rattler reliever Brian Kappel ran his record to 3-0 by getting out of a bases loaded one out jam in the top of the eighth inning. Kappel is 6-for-6 in save opportunities and in the nineteen games he has appeared in, the Rattlers are 14-5.

BRIEF COMPANY IN THE BASEMENT: Clinton’s win in the completion of the suspended game tied them with the Rattlers for seventh in the Midwest League’s Western Division. The last time the Rattlers and L-Kings were tied for last this half was on July 15. Clinton had been in eighth place by themselves since July 16.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Zach Phillips was a 23rd round pick of the Rangers in the 2004 draft out of Galt (CA) High School. He pitched one season for Sacramento City College and signed with the Rangers before the 2005 draft. Phillips made two relief appearances for the LumberKings last season after appearing in fourteen games (eleven starts) for the Rangers Arizona League affiliate. In his last start, Phillips took a perfect game through 6-2/3 innings at Pohlman Field against the Beloit Snappers. He gave up a two out single to lose the no-hit bid. But, Phillips got the win and struck out nine over 7-1/3 shutout innings. This is Phillips first start against the Rattlers, but he did make one relief appearance in the MWL Western Division Championship series against Wisconsin. He pitched 1/3 of an inning in Game One on September 10 and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk.
