Game Notes for 8/18

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Peoria Chiefs beat the Rattlers 7-2 at Fox Cities Stadium last night. Mitch Atkins struck out a career high twelve batters and picked up his twelfth win of the season. The Chiefs rallied from an early 1-0 deficit with a five run third inning and never looked back.

NEW SEASON HIGH: Rattler batters combined to strikeout a total of fifteen times in the game last night. Peoria reliever John Mueller struck out three over the final three innings for his first professional save. Rattler shortstop Chris Minaker was the only Timber Rattler in the lineup to not strikeout last night.

GARTH PARTIES ON: Rattler infielder Ron Garth hit his team leading tenth home run of the season last night. His blast was a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Garth had two other hits last night for his seventh game of at least three hits this season.

FILE THESE AWAY: Peoria first baseman Ryan Norwood is 24-for-57 (.421) against the Rattlers this season, but was 21-for-45 (.467) at Fox Cities Stadium and 3-for-12 (.250) at O’Brien Field. Peoria outfielder Yusuf Carter homered in his first at bat of the four game series against the Rattlers. He went hitless in his next fourteen at bats with eight strikeouts. The Rattlers and Chiefs meet in a four game series August 28-31 at O’Brien Field.

ROSTER MOVE: Rattler outfielder Mike Saunders had joined team Canada for the Olympic Qualifying tournament in Cuba. Saunders hit .240 with four homers, 39 RBI, and 22 stolen bases for the Rattlers this season.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Stan Posluszny joins the Rattlers today. He was a 34th round pick of the Mariners in the 2006 draft out of West Virginia University after hitting .332 with ten home runs and sixty RBI for the Mountaineers. Posluszny signed shortly after the draft and was assigned to the Mariner affiliate in the Arizona League. He hit .305 with a pair of homers and eighteen RBI for the AZL M’s.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Russell Haltiwanger was a 29th round pick of the Reds out of Newberry College in the 2005 draft. He made one relief appearance against the Rattlers in the series in May. In the first game of the doubleheader on May 13, Haltiwanger pitched one scoreless inning without allowing a hit or a walk and struck out one. In his last start, which also happened to be his third Midwest League start, Haltiwanger pitched 3-2/3 innings against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays on August 13. He gave up three runs (one earned) on three hits for a no decision.
