Mariners: April 8, 1997

The starting pitching matchup for the April 8, 1997 game between the Mariners and the Cleveland Indians would have been one heck of a matchup...If it had been April 8, 1987 or even April 8, 1992.

Dennis Martinez got the ball for the M's and Orel Hersheiser took the hill for the Indians.

Cleveland scored four times in the top of the first. The M's answered with four in the bottom of the first.

Marquis Grissom had a solo homer for the Tribe. Jay Buhner hit a three run homer for the M's in the Seattle half of the inning.

Cleveland got another run in the top of the second inning, but Martinez settled down for a bit.

Then, in the bottom of the fourth, the M's chased Hersheiser. They scored a pair of runs on an RBI grounder by Joey Cora and an RBI single by Ken Griffey. Edgar Martinez followed with a two run homer.

But, Martinez did not record an out in the top of the fifth. He gave up two singles to start the inning and on came Edwin Hurtado. Then, Sandy Alomar hit a three-run homer and the Indians got to within 8-7.

Seattle put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth to pad the lead back out to five runs. RBI hits by Lee Tinsley, Griffey, and Buhner along with a run scoring wild pitch made it 12-7 Seattle.

Junior hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, his sixth long ball of the year, to account for the last two runs of the game.

Hurtado got the win as the Mariners moved their record to 3-4 on the '97 season. They were still in third place, but they were only one game out in the AL West.
