Mariners: April 28, 1997

The '97 Mariners started a series at Yankee Stadium on April 28. They built a 5-1 lead, but wound up on the losing end of a 6-5 decision.

Edgar Martinez broke a 1-1 tie with a two run homer off Kenny Rogers in the top of the third. In the fifth, Jeff Blowers had an RBI double and an error allowed another run to score and Seattle had their lead against the defending World Series champs.

Jeff Fassero, who was 4-0 coming into the game, got into trouble in the bottom of the sixth as he loaded the bases with two out. Tim Raines (ed. Raines? Really?) doubled in two runs and the lead was cut to 5-3.

Greg McCarthy came on for the seventh. He walked Bernie Williams and gave up a single to Tino Martinez. That was all for McCarthy as Bobby Ayala relieved. Cecil Fieldeer doubled. Williams scored, but Martinez was out at home. Pat Kelly pinch ran for Fielder and scored on a single by Paul O'Neill.

Joe Girardi hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the eighth and this Mariano Rivera guy pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

The loss dropped Seattle to 15-10. They reamined in first place 1/2 game in front of the Rangers in the AL West.

The series in New York continues on April 29.
