The '97 Mariners ended their series against the Kansas City Royals with a wild 12-1o loss at the Kingdome.
The game was tied 4-4 heading to the top of the fifth inning. Edwin Hurtado had relieved Bob Wells in the top of the fourth inning and did not allow a run in that frame. But, the fifth was a different story.
An RBI single by Joe Vitiello broke the tie. Later in the inning, Craig Paquette drove a run with a double and Mike Macfarlane drove in two more with a single. David Howard's two run homer put the Royals up 10-4.
Seattle scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to get within 10-8. Jay Buhner, Dan Wilson, and Russ Davis all doubled. Joey Cora knocked in Davis with a single. Alex Rodriguez doubled in Cora for the last run of the inning.
But, Jeff King homered in the top of the sixth to put the Royals up 11-8.
Seattle did get to within 11-10. Davis doubled in a run in the bottom of the sixth. Ken Griffey hit a solo home run, his tenth long ball of the season, in the seventh.
Jay Bell's sac fly later in the game capped the scoring.

The Mariners were 13-8 after the loss. They are still in first place, two games in front of Texas in the AL West.
The '97 Mariners have April 24 off before heading out to Toronto and New York on a road trip.
