The '97 Mariners started a road trip with a game at SkyDome against the Toronto Blue Jays. They started it on the right foot with a 13-7 comeback win. It was an odd game, but it wasn't odd that Ken Griffey had a big game.
Seattle scored four runs in the top of the first inning against Roger Clemens. Edgar Martinez drove in the first run. Paul Sorrento singled in two more. Brent Gates had a sac fly to give a 4-0 lead to Dennis Martinez heading into the bottom of the first.
But, Toronto scored five times in the bottom of the first. Ed Sprague drew a bases loaded walk and Carlos Delgado hit a grand slam for a 5-4 Blue Jay lead.
Ken Griffey tied the game with a homer off Clemens in the top of the third to tie the game. But, Shawn Green homered in the fourth and sixth innings to put Toronto up 7-5.
Then, Griffey homered with two out in the seventh to pull Seattle to within 7-6.
The Mariners came all the way back in the top of the eighth by scoring seven runs. Tim Crabtree replaced Clemens and walked Jay Buhner to start the inning. Dan Plesac relieved Crabtree and struck out pinch hitter Jeff Blowers. But, Russ Davis pinch hit for Gates and hit a home run to put the M's in front. Later in the inning, Joey Cora singled in a run. Mike Timlin relieved Plesac and Alex Rodriguez hit a three run homer off Timlin. Griffey was next and hit his third home run of the night (13th of the season). That put Seattle up 13-7.
The Jays got a run in the bottom of the ninth off Scott Sanders, but Joe Carter struck out to end the game.
