Braves: April 22, 1982

The Milwaukee Braves got a 9-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on April 22, 1957. Bob Buhl got plenty of offense and the Braves ran their season opening record to 5-0.

Buhl, the Milwaukee starting pitcher, allowed a first inning run. Casey Wise started the game with a single. Dee Fondy followed with a double, but Buhl worked out of the first.

Milwaukee took advantage of an error and a bout of wildness from Bob Rush in the bottom of the first. A single, an error, a popup, and a walk loaded the bases. Bobby Thomson grounded into a force out at home for the second out. Then, Johnny Logan walked to force in a run. Billy Bruton was next and his single drove in a pair of runs. Del Crandall line out to end the inning and a rain delay started.

After an hour, play resumed. Buhl pitched a scoreless second. Rush did not. Hank Aaron homered, his second of the season, with two out and none on for a 4-1 lead.

The Braves crushed Rush for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 9-1. An error led to the first run of the inning. Rush almost got out of the frame with a double play. But, Aaron doubled in a run. Eddie Matthews singled to drive in Aaron. Joe Adcock finished the scoring in the inning with a long home run.

Buhl gave up a two-run double to Bobby Del Greco in the top of the sixth and reliever Gene Conley allowed a run in the eight, but the Braves had no trouble in finishing off the Cubs.
