Game Notes -- 4/22

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Whitecaps scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Timber Rattlers 4-3. Scott Sizemore drove in the winning run with a one out, bases loaded single off Natividad Dilone. Sizemore was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in the game.

DÉJÀ VU: The Timber Rattler bullpen blew four save opportunities last week. Yesterday was the third time the opponents won a game last week in the bottom of the ninth.

DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN: Dilone also gave up the bases loaded, game winning single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to Matt Sweeney of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on April 16 in a 4-3 Kernel win.

VA-VA-VARVARO: Wisconsin starting pitcher Anthony Varvaro allowed one run on three hits over 5-1/3 innings and struck out six. Yesterday was the second consecutive start in which Varvaro set a professional high for innings pitched in a game. It was also the second consecutive game for Varvaro to strikeout six batters and it matched his career professional high.

MOVED DOWN; GOT HOT: Yesterday, Carlos Triunfel hit seventh for the first time this season and went 2-for-3. The seventeen-year old Triunfel had hit either second or third in his first nine games of the season and was hitting .222 (8-for-36).

IT’S GETTING BREEZY IN HERE: Timber Rattler hitters struck out fourteen times against West Michigan pitching yesterday. Whitecap starter Duane Below struck out nine in six innings. The Rattlers have struck out 130 times in the first twelve games.

WHAT’S THE RATIO? Rattler hitters have walked just sixteen times in the first twelve games. The K:BB ratio for Rattler hitters is just over 8:1

MAYBE A FAST START WOULD HELP: The Rattlers have not scored a first inning run in the first twelve games this season. The first three Rattler hitters of the game have gone down in order nine times in the first twelve games.

OPPOSING STARTER: Chris Cody was the 8th round pick of the Tigers in the 2006 draft out of Manhattan College. He was the pitcher of the year in the Metro Atlantic Conference as he went 12-2 with a 1.42ERA and 105 strikeouts to lead the conference in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. Cody was 4-1 in eleven starts with a 2.38ERA for Oneonta 2006. In his last start for West Michigan, Cody pitched eight scoreless innings, gave up four hits, walked two, and struck out five for a win over Clinton on April 17. Cody has allowed just one unearned run in 19-2/3 innings pitched in 2007. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Mariners.
