Game Notes -- 4/24

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers defeated the Whitecaps 6-3. Wisconsin broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Gavin Dickey’s RBI double with one out in the seventh drove in the go ahead run. Greg Halman and Alex Liddi also had RBI hits in the frame.

UNDER PROTEST: Base umpire Joel Hospodka originally ruled the double by Dickey a catch, but reversed his call. That led to Whitecap manager Tom Brookens playing the remainder of the game under protest.

MORE LIKE IT: Wisconsin relievers Joe Kantakevich and Andrew Barb combined to toss three scoreless innings after the Rattlers took the lead. Kantakevich allowed one hit over two innings. Barb walked one in the ninth, but struck out Audy Ciriaco to end the game and earn his first save. The save ended a string of four straight blown saves by the Rattler bullpen.

JUST LIKE OLD TIMES: Barb had eighteen saves for the Lakewood BlueClaws, the South Atlantic League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, in the 2006 season.

GO O: The Rattlers matched their season high for runs scored in a ballgame with six last night. The other time the Rattlers scored six runs in a game was a 6-3 win at Cedar Rapids on April 14.

LEADING THE WAY: Gavin Dickey had his first multi-hit game of the 2007 season last night. He had three hits, drove in a pair, scored a run, and stole a base. Alex Liddi drove in two runs with a pair of doubles.

SEVENTH HEAVEN: Rattler shortstop Carlos Triunfel hit seventh in the order for the second time in the series last night and went 2-for-4. In the two games in the seven slot, Triunfel is 4-for-7. He hit leadoff on Sunday and was 0-for-4.

WELCOME BACK: Kalian Sams was the DH for Wisconsin last night and played his first game since April 13. Sams went 0-for-3 with a walk.

SNAPPING STREAKS: The win last night ended several losing streaks for the Rattlers. Wisconsin ended a four game losing streak, a six game road losing streak, a six game losing streak here at Fifth Third Ballpark, and an eleven game losing streak in the state of Michigan.

OPPOSING STARTER: Lauren Gagnier was the 10th round pick of the Tigers in the 2006. He pitched for Cal State Fullerton and led the Big West Conference with 14 wins in his final season for the Titans. Gagnier was 14-5 with a 2.80ERA. He made nine appearances (one start) for the Oneonta Tigers of the New York-Penn League after signing with the Tigers. He went 1-1 with a 0.70 ERA for Oneonta. In his last start for the Whitecaps, Gagnier allowed one unearned run in 6-1/3 innings against the Clinton LumberKings. However, he took the loss at Fifth Third Ballpark on April 19. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Mariners.
