ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Lugnuts beat the Rattlers 8-1. Lansing starter Nate Starner allowed one run on eight hits and struck out nine for the win. Wisconsin starter Ricky Orta walked six batters and gave up eight runs on eight hits to take the loss.
TWO OUT BINGO: The Rattlers trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. The Lugnuts had two runners on with two outs and Jonathon Jaspe doubled in both runs. Yuber Rodriguez was next and he singled in Jaspe for a 4-0 lead.
ATTEMPTED COMEBACK: The Rattlers had runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the fourth after Carlos Peguero doubled in a run. Starner struck out the next three batters to keep the Lugnuts in front 4-1.
WILD INNING: Lansing had the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth. Orta walked three consecutive batters to force in three runs and the Lugnuts went up 7-1. An infield single by Jonathan Baksh drove in the final run of the inning and the night.
SCORING CHANGE: After last night’s game, the error that was charged to Rattler shortstop Juan Diaz during the bottom of the fourth was changed to a single for Matt Liuzza. That changed Orta’s line from six earned runs over 3-1/3 innings to eight earned runs over 3-1/3 innings.
ANOTHER STREAK: This is the fourth time this season that the Timber Rattlers have lost at least five consecutive games.
WELCOME BACK: Ron Garth made his first appearance of the season for the Timber Rattlers when he pinch hit in the top of the eighth inning. Garth joined the Rattlers yesterday after stops in High Desert (California League), Peoria (Arizona League), and West Tennessee (Southern League). In 2006, Garth led the Rattlers in home runs with ten and was tied for the team lead in RBI with 48.
OPPOSING STARTER: Graham Godfrey was a 34th round pick by the Blue Jays in the 2006 draft out of the College of Charleston. He signed in late August did not pitch professionally in 2006. Godfrey joined the Lugnuts in early May and made his professional debut on May 10 against the Swing of the Quad Cities with a victory. In his start prior to tonight, Godfrey lost to South Bend. On July 6, the Silver Hawks got to Godfrey for five runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings. Godfrey walked two and struck out one in losing his second straight start. Tonight is Godfrey’s first start against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
