Game Notes -- 7/9

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Cougars erased a 7-0 deficit and beat the Timber Rattlers 11-8. Wisconsin hit five home runs in the game to build the early lead. The Rattlers took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. But, the Cougars scored six times in that inning for a 9-8 lead. Kane County tacked on two more runs in the eighth to put the game away.

POWER SURGE: The Rattlers hit three consecutive home runs in the top of the third inning off Cougar starting pitcher James Heuser. Trevor Lawhorn led off the frame with his third home run. Carlos Peguero followed with his team-leading eighth homer. Alex Liddi concluded the back-to-back-to-back blasts with his seventh homer of the year.

KEEPING UP THE PRESSURE: Reed Eastley hit his first home run as a Rattler, a two-run shot in the top of the third. Calvin Beamon hit his first professional run home run, another two-run homer, in the top of the fourth. Those long balls gave the Rattlers a 7-0 lead.

REACHING THE LIMIT: Yesterday, Rattler starter Anthony Varvaro made his first start of the second half after spending time on the disabled list. He pitched three scoreless innings and struck out five before reaching his pitch limit.

OUT OF THE PEN: The Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Eddy Fernandez to cut into the lead the first time.

IN THE SEVENTH: The Cougars had runners at first and third and one out against Rattler reliever Rollie Gibson in the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 8-4. Sean Doolittle sent a slow roller to second. The Rattlers got a force out at second, but could not turn the double play and a run scored. The Cougars got a single from Haas Pratt to put runners on first and second. Back-to-back RBI singles by Matt Smith and Jermaine Mitchell made the score 8-6. Christian Vitters was next and hit a three-run homer.

A DIFFERENT FIVE: Vitters drove in five runs in the game for the Cougars.

GOOD SIGN? The previous high for home runs in a game for the Rattlers was four. The Rattlers lost that game 10-9 at Burlington.

WATCH FOR IT: With a lot of time between scheduled starts, Steve Richard may make a relief appearance in tonight's game with Kane County.

OPPOSING STARTER: Trevor Cahill was a second round pick of the Athletics out of Vista High School in San Diego, California in the 2006 draft. Cahill made four starts for the Arizona League affiliate of the A’s in 2006 and had no record with an ERA of 3.00. He has made a pair of appearances against the Rattlers this season. Cahill came on in relief on May 24 at Elfstom Stadium Cahill gave up four runs on three hits, three walks, and a hit batsman over 1-2/3 innings. In a start at Time Warner Cable Field on June 10, Cahill picked up a victory despite allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits over five innings with eight strikeouts. In his start prior to this evening, Cahill beat the Peoria Chiefs on July 4. He allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and three walks over six innings with nine strikeouts.
