Baseball History -- April 8

Complete entry for April 8 is at BaseballLibrary.com HERE.

Highlighted entries:
1994
Braves P Kent Mercker no-hits the Dodgers‚ 6-0‚ fanning 10 in the process. It his first complete game in the majors. Chan Ho Park comes on to pitch in the 9th for the Dodgers‚ becoming the first Korean player to appear in a major league game.

For reasons that won't be mentioned, I watched this game in a bar in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
1991
Nolan Ryan starts and Goose Gossage pitches in relief for Texas in a 5-4 loss to Milwaukee. It marks the first time a 300-game winner hurls in the same contest as a teammate with 300 saves.

Did that happen again (with different pitchers)? Will that happen again?
1987
Pitchers Phil Niekro and Steve Carlton of the Indians team up to beat the Blue Jays‚ 14-3 Niekro wins his 312th and Carlton tosses 4 innings of relief. It is the first time two 300-game winners have pitched in the same game as teammates.

Okay, I'm positive this won't happen again.

1924

In Nashville‚ the Giants lose an exhibition game 9-8 to the White Sox on a scorekeeper's error. The Sox scored 8 runs in the early innings‚ but the scorekeeper posted a 9. When the Giants came back to score 8 runs‚ the scoreboard indicated New York was a run down‚ and that's the way it ended. Both managers were furious after the game when the error was pointed out by several writers traveling with the teams.

Furious about an exhibition game? Different era.
