The '97 Mariners hit the road for the first time of th 1997 season. And they opened the road portion of their schedule with a 5-3 win at Fenway Park over the Boston Red Sox.
The starting pitching matchup was Randy Johnson against Steve Avery.
Rich Amaral gave the M's a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the second inning. In the third inning, Alex Rodriguez hit his second home run of the season.
Johnson gave up a solo home run to John Valentin in the fourth inning. Valentin hit another solo shot in the sixth inning to get the Sox to within 3-2.
The M's added some insurance on an RBI single by Jay Buhner in the seventh and an RBI double by Lee Tinsley in the eighth.
Mike Stanley drove in a Red Sox run in the bottom of the eighth with a single off Bobby Ayala. Then, Norm Charlton pitched a scoreless ninth -- with a pair of strikeouts, a walk, a wild pitch, and a strikeout of Nomar Garciaparra -- to earn the save.
The M's are 5-4 after action on the day and one game behind Oakland in the AL West.
