ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers swept a double header from the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Rattlers won game one 9-6. Wisconsin took the nightcap 7-0.
GAME ONE RECAP: The Kernels took a 1-0 lead on Brian Walker’s homer in the second inning. The Rattlers stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. A two-run single by Trevor Lawhorn was the big hit of the inning. But, the Kernels took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth. A single by Wil Ortiz was followed by a grand slam off the bat of Matt Sweeney. Wisconsin rallied in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game with an error and take the lead on a Joe White RBI single. Carlos Peguero delivered a two-run double later in the inning.
GAME TWO RECAP: Ricky Orta pitched a 4-hit complete game shutout. He struck out a career high nine batters and walked two. Peguero and Juan Diaz each had two-run homers to pace the offense.
A NIGHT OF FIRSTS: Orta’s complete game shutout was the first of his professional career. The homer by Diaz was the first of his career. The double header sweep was the first by the Rattlers this season. By winning game two, the Rattlers have their first four game winning streak of the season. The Rattlers are 8-6 in the second half and are two games over .500 for the first time this season.
NEMESIS: Sweeney has hit five of his eleven home runs against the Rattlers this season. He has driven in ten runs over the nine games he has played against Wisconsin this season.
NEMESIS (PT II): Peguero is 10-for-20 with two homers and 14 RBI in five games against the Kernels this season.
FLAWLESS: The Rattler defense did not commit an error during yesterday’s double header.
LONG ARM OF THE LAW: Juan Beltran threw out Wil Ortiz as Ortiz was trying to steal second in the top of the third inning of game two. Beltran has thrown out 23 of 51(.451) would-be base stealers this season.
OPPOSING STARTER: Trevor Bell was the 37th overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Angels out of Crescenta Valley (CA) High School. Bell went 4-2 with an ERA of 3.50 in sixteen starts for the Orem Owlz in 2006. He made his professional debut for the Angels Arizona League affiliate in 2005 where he had no record in four starts with a 4.50 ERA. He made his Midwest League debut against the Rattlers on April 14 of this season. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits with no walks and five strikeouts over six innings to take the loss. Bell got a no decision against the Rattlers on June 16. Wisconsin got to him for three runs on eight hits over 6-2/3 innings. In his last start, Bell allowed one run on six hits and struck out seven over seven innings for the win against Kane County on June 30.
