Game Notes -- 7/8

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Cougars edged the Rattlers 3-2. Christian Vitters drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to force in the winning run.

EARLY WORK: Wisconsin scored two runs in the first inning off Henry Rodriguez. The Rattlers loaded the bases with one out. Trevor Lawhorn forced in the first run with a walk. Joe White made it 2-0 with an infield groundout.

WHEN THE SACKS ARE FULL: Lawhorn is 3-for-3 with 10 RBI in five plate appearances when batting with the bases loaded for the Rattlers. He has two-run double, a two-run single, a grand slam, a sacrifice fly, and the walk last night.

RIGHT BACK TO EVEN: The Cougars also scored a pair of runs in their first at bat of the night. They loaded the bases with one out against Rattler starter Keith Renaud. Jermaine Mitchell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Matt Smith knocked in a run with a single.

NOT FOR LACK OF CHANCES: The game remained tied 2-2 until the bottom of the ninth inning. Wisconsin had plenty of base runners before that point. The Rattler hitters were not retired in order until the eighth. Before that point, Wisconsin had the leadoff man reach in the third, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The Rattlers had a runner on third base with two outs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh. Wisconsin left ten men on base.

FIRST PRO START: Renaud threw just over 50 pitches in 2-1/3 innings in his first professional start. He walked four, hit two batters, and struck out one in a no decision.

YEOMAN’S WORK: Mike Wagner and Joe Kantakevich combined to shutout the Cougars for 5-2/3 innings. The duo allowed three total hits and struck out six.

STREAK: The Rattlers have lost six straight games to the Cougars.

ROSTER MOVE: Anthony Varvaro, today’s starting pitcher for the Rattlers, came off the disabled list this morning. To make room for Varvaro, pitcher Nathan Adcock has been placed on the bereavement list.

OPPOSING STARTER: James Heuser was a 27th round pick of Oakland in the 2003 draft out of Illinois Valley Community College. He spent part of the 2005 with the Cougars before needing Tommy John surgery after 18 games that season. Heuser’s went 5-4 in 14 games (12 starts) for Vancouver in the Northwest League last season. He is 1-1 in two starts against the Rattlers this season. Heuser faced the Rattlers on May 22 in Grand Chute and took the loss. In that start, he was hit for six runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts in a 6-5 Rattler win. On June 9 in game one of a double header on Time Warner Cable Field, Heuser tossed a seven-inning, complete game shutout. He gave up four hits and struck out six. Peoria beat Heuser in his last start. On July 3, the Chiefs scored six runs on nine hits over 3-1/3 innings.
