Game Notes -- 7/6

ABOUT THURSDAY: The Timber lost 7-2 to the Kernels. Trevor Bell struck out ten Rattlers over five innings for the win. Rattler starting pitcher Eddy Fernandez gave up three homers and took the loss.

TWO-TIMERS: Julio Perez, Wil Ortiz, and Anderson Rosario each hit home runs for the Kernels yesterday. It was the second home run of the season for all three hitters.

TOUGH DAY IN THE FIELD: After making no errors in the doubleheader on Wednesday, the Rattler defense committed three errors yesterday. Shortstop Juan Diaz committed two of the miscues. Catcher Jair Fernandez was charged with his first error of the season.

STREAKS SNAPPED: The Rattlers had their season high four-game winning streak ended with the loss. Wisconsin also had a four-game home winning streak ended with the defeat at the hands of the Kernels.

BELL WEATHER: The Kernel starter set a professional career high for strikeouts with ten yesterday. Bell struck out the side in the second and third. Bell allowed two runs on four hits and also walked five batters.

BULLPEN DAY: Fernandez left after three innings. Wisconsin used four relievers out of the bullpen to soak up the final six innings. Rollie Gibson allowed a run, but struck out four over his two innings. Shawn Kelley pitched the sixth and allowed an unearned run. Mike Wagner worked two scoreless frames. Joe Kantakevich pitched a scoreless ninth.

OFFENSIVELY: Jamie McOwen singled in a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to account for the only Wisconsin runs. McOwen matched his season high hitting streak at three games with that single.

THEY’LL BE BACK: The Rattlers begin an eleven game road trip tomorrow. However, with three off days in the mix, Wisconsin will not return home until July 21 when they host the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Rattlers are off to Kane County for a three game series July 7-9. Wisconsin will be off on July 10 and 11 before heading to Lansing for a four game series July 12-15. There is an off day on July 16. Then, the Rattlers are in Beloit to take on the Snappers July 17-20.

OPPOSING STARTER: Sean O’Sullivan was a third round pick of the Angels in the 2005 draft out of Valhalla High School in El Cajon, California. O’Sullivan spent a season pitching for Grossmont Junior College and signed with the Angels before the 2006 draft. Last season he was 4-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 14 starts for the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League. In walked seven and struck out 55 in 71-1/3 innings for the Owlz. Tonight is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. In his last start for the Kernels, O’Sullivan allowed one run on two hits over eight innings against the Kane County Cougars. Despite striking out seven and walking just one in that game on July 1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium, O’Sullivan received a no decision. He is the ranked the 9th best prospect in the Angels organization by Baseball America.
