ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers defeated the LumberKings 7-4. Tony Butler allowed three runs (two earned) over six innings and struck out five for his second consecutive victory. Jamie McOwen, Ron Garth, Joe White, and Juan Beltran all had a pair of hits to lead the Rattler offense.
OUT OF THE GATE: Wisconsin scored three runs on back-to-back errors by the LumberKings in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Jay Haefner threw wildly to first with runners at second and third with two out and both runners scored. Later in the inning first baseman Mauro Gomez dropped a throw and the third run of the frame scored.
BACK WITH THE LUMBER: Clinton collected three consecutive singles in the top of the second. Haefner’s RBI single included an error that allowed the second run of the inning to score. Josh Bradbury’s RBI sacrifice fly tied the game.
AFTER THAT, NOTHING: Butler gave up two hits after the second inning and did not allow another run while striking out five. Butler is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, thirteen strikeouts and three walks in his last two starts.
BACK IN FRONT: Garth started the Rattler third with a single. White followed with an RBI double to give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead. Jamie McOwen’s two-out RBI single drove in White for a two run lead.
WHITE NOISE: White extended his team high hitting streak to thirteen games with his double in the third. White is 19-for-44 (.432) during the streak. This is now the longest hitting streak on the Rattler team in 2007.
HOLDING ON: Rattler reliever Tom Ellis pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but allowed a Chad Tracy homer and hit Gomez in the top of the seventh. He left in favor of Mike Wagner with the Rattlers leading 6-4. Wagner got the three outs in the eighth. Wisconsin tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth and Wagner pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
FIRST SINCE: Sean White is making a rehab start as a Rattler for the Seattle Mariners. The last time a major leaguer rehabbed with the Timber Rattlers was on August 22, 2000. Gil Meche, a Timber Rattler in 1998, pitched five scoreless innings and allowed one hit with two walks and six strikeouts against Fort Wayne at Fox Cities Stadium on that night. Wisconsin would go on to win that game 1-0, but Meche received a no decision.
CLINTON STARTER: Kasey Kiker was the first round pick of the Rangers out of Russell County High School in Alabama in the 2006 draft. He was the 12th player taken in that draft. Kiker went 0-7 with a 4.13 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) for Spokane, the Northwest League affiliate of the Rangers, in 2006. Kiker started 2007 at extended spring training and joined the LumberKings in late May. In his last start, Kiker allowed two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts against the South Bend Silver Hawks on August 11 at Alliant Energy Field. He received a no decision in that game. Kiker has won his last two decisions. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers, but he was 0-1 with a 3.12 ERA against the Everett AquaSox in two starts for Spokane in the Northwest League in 2006. Over 8-2/3 innings, Kiker allowed three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
