ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Bees beat the Timber Rattlers 4-1. Three Burlington pitchers combined to hold the Rattlers to two hits. Jason Godin went five innings as the starter and got the win. Kurt Mertins broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out, RBI single in the third inning. Michael Thompson hit a two run homer in the fourth for the final runs of the game.
THE LAST HIT: Juan Beltran’s two-out RBI single in the top of the second inning tied the game 1-1. It was also the second and final hit for the Rattlers. Wisconsin’s only other hit last night was a two-out double by Reed Eastley in the first inning.
TOUGH LOSS: Rattler starting pitcher Kyle Parker allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over four innings. The Bees scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. The other three runs were scored by Burlington after there were two outs.
HUMAN STOP SIGN: Burlington catcher Jeff Howell threw out three runners at second base last night. He caught Kuo Hui Lo and Calvin Beamon attempting to steal second in the fourth and sixth innings. Joe White attempted to get to second on a ball that got away from Howell in the seventh inning and was out, too.
THE LONG BALL: The home run by Thompson was his nineteenth of the season. He is fourth in the Midwest League in homers.
ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER: The Rattlers have scored one run in a game twenty times this season. They are 1-19 in those games.
OUT OF CONTENTION: The Wisconsin loss coupled with a Cedar Rapids win officially eliminated the Timber Rattlers from playoff contention. The Kernels currently hold the Western Division second half wild card spot and Wisconsin is 10-1/2 games behind Cedar Rapids.
YEAR TWO: This is the first time in Timber Rattler history that the team has missed the playoffs two consecutive seasons. The seasons that the Rattlers have missed the playoffs are: 1995, 2002, 2004, and 2006.
TROUBLE AT THE HIVE: The Rattlers are 0-4 at Community Field this season.
BURLINGTON STARTER: Mario Santiago was signed as a non-drafted free agent in June of 2005 by the Royals after attending Laredo Community College and Baton Rouge Community College. In 2006, Santiago made twelve appearances (eight starts) for the Bees and went 3-6 with a 5.37ERA. Santiago is 5-9 with a save in 24 appearances (18 starts) for the Bees in 2007. In his last start, Santiago lost at Cedar Rapids as he allowed five runs on nine hits over 5-2/3 innings on August 21. Santiago has lost his last two starts. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. Santiago did face Seattle’s Arizona League affiliate in 2005. He was 0-1 and allowed four runs on six hits over two innings in two relief appearances.
