ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers beat the Peoria Chiefs 5-4 in ten innings. Alex Liddi singled in Kuo Hui Lo with the winning run. Liddi had a pair of RBI on the night.
EXTRA! EXTRA! The Timber Rattlers are 9-2 in extra innings this season. They are 5-1 in extra frames at home and have beaten the Chiefs twice in two extra inning games this season.
BUONA SERA FOR LIDDI: The Rattler third baseman had a pair of hits and knocked in two runs. Liddi has 49 RBI this season.
SETTING THE TABLE: Lo walked, stole second, and scored on a two out hit by Liddi in the sixth inning. Lo doubled to start the tenth and scored on the game-winning hit by Liddi. Lo leads the Rattlers in stolen bases with 26 and in runs scored with 56.
BUTLER SHOWS HIS QUALITY: Tony Butler made his third consecutive quality start when he went 7-1/3 innings last night and allowed three runs. All three Peoria runs off Butler were in the fourth inning: An RBI grounder by Derek Schermerhorn and a two-run homer by Marquez Smith. The 7-1/3 inning outing was the longest of Butler’s pro career.
RUNNING WILD: The Chiefs were 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts last night.
SAVE OPPORTUNITY: The Rattlers held a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth when Butler allowed a one-out single. Justin Souza got the final two outs of the eighth, but gave up a lead-off double to Russ Canzler in the ninth. One out later, Smith singled in Canzler with the tying run. That blown save was the 20th of the season by the Rattler bullpen.
GAMBLE DOESN’T PAY OFF: Leon Johnson was at second base with one out in the top of the tenth. Darwin Barney lifted a deep fly ball to left-center that Rattler centerfielder Calvin Beamon ran down for out number two. Johnson tagged at second and never stopped. Beamon hit shortstop Juan Diaz on the cutoff and Diaz threw a strike to catcher Jair Fernandez at the plate to cut down Johnson and keep the game tied 4-4.
DOUBLING UP: The Rattler defense turned four double plays last night to give them 105 on the season.
PEORIA STARTER: Jeremy Papelbon was the 19th round pick of the Cubs in the 2006 draft out of the University of North Florida. He was 4-0 with three saves and a 1.83 ERA in eighteen relief appearances for the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League in 2006. He started 2007 in the Peoria bullpen; moving into the rotation at the start of August. Papelbon is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts this season. His last start was a loss to Cedar Rapids on August 17 in which he took the loss. Papelbon allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings with a walk and three strikeouts. He has made six relief appearances against Wisconsin in 2007. Papelbon is 0-1 with a save and a 2.16ERA against the Rattlers. He has given up two runs on five hits with two walks and eleven strikeouts in 8-1/3 innings versus Wisconsin this season.
