JJ's No-no

Since there is no Rattler game tonight; I don't really have any place to be; and my scorebook from 2000 is just sitting right there...Here's a little flashback to April 29, 2000. That was the date of the first no hitter in Timber Rattler history. It was thrown by this guy who is now the closer for the Mariners...JJ Putz. This was the first game of a doubleheader and was a seven inning game.

That Frick 6-3 that is bolded in the sixth inning was the key play to keep the no-hitter alive. Castillo made a diving stop behind the second base bag, got to his feet and threw a strike to McCorkle to save the no hitter.

I interviewed JJ after the game and he gave a lot of credit to Castillo for the no-hitter. He called it a major league play. He would know.

In the game, Putz tossed 109 pitches walked five and struck out four.

The only downer to the day was game two. The Rattlers had just two hits and were shutout 5-0. Some guy Mariner fans may remember had a pretty good game two against Matt Thornton, Kevin Olore and Danny Delgado. Luis Ugeto was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored.
