More on a Monday

First, Mehring Monday is up at the Rattler website.

Doubleheaders

When coming up with a topic for today in the wee small hours, I was trying to decide between Rattler extra-inning games and doubleheaders. I couldn't decide. So, I am going with a Rattler doubleheader that went extra-innings. See how many names you recognize.
Next, I just can't let go of that Burlington-Quad Cities game from Sunday.

A gem turns into a loss

Burlington Bees pitcher Blake Wood needed two pitches to get three hitters out.

Since that was impossible, Bees manager Jim Gabella pulled the former Georgia Tech star to begin the ninth inning with a no-hitter intact and two pitches shy of his maximum of 100 pitches. Then, things took a turn for the worst.

The Swing of Quad Cities' Daryl Jones blooped a single to left field off Bees reliever Ryan DiPietro, scoring Antone DeJesus to break up the no-hitter and erase Burlington's tenuous ead. Four batters later, Christian Lopez's squeeze bunt scored Jones as the Swing took a 2-1 victory Sunday at Community Field to salvage a split of the two-game series.

Go to the link to see the picture of the go ahead run scoring in the top of the ninth.

For his efforts, Wood was named Pitcher of the week in the Midwest League.

Meanwhile, it looks like ex-Rattler Marshall Hubbard ('05) was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the Southern League. No official release yet, but just scroll down at the Page HERE.

Lastly, the Midwest League Notebook is out. Here is a preview of Peoria, Wisconsin's opponent to start the week.

WHO'S HOT: SS Darwin Barney is batting .351 (13-for-37) over his last 10 games with nine RBIs, five runs scored and a home run. ... RF James Adduci is hitting .324 (12-for-37) over his last 10 games with six RBIs and five runs scored.

WHO'S NOT: RHP Jacob Renshaw (12-8, 4.33 ERA) lasted just 2 1/3 innings after allowing five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and two walks in an 11-1 loss to Cedar Rapids on Aug. 16.

DID YOU KNOW: Renshaw has received a decision in 20 consecutive starts. ... Chiefs pitchers combined to walk a season-high 11 batters in a 10-0 loss to Kane County Aug. 13.

WASTED OPPORTUNITIES: The Chiefs' offense managed to pound out 16 hits but stranded 14 runners on base while having another pair thrown out in plays at the plate in a 6-4 loss to Cedar Rapids Friday.

ROSTER MOVES: 2007 draftees Ty Wright and Marquez Smith joined the team on Aug. 16 while Clark Hardman was sent to Mesa.
