Coaching shake-up
Seattle Mariners pitching coordinator Pat Rice, who lives in Colorado Springs, was filling in for Rainiers pitching coach Dwight Bernard – until he was fired.Rice, a 20-year Mariners employee, had been in charge of the development of all Seattle minor league pitchers for the past eight years. Rice coached seven members of the current Mariners pitching staff, including six members of the American League’s fifth-best bullpen.
Bernard is in Milwaukee attending a reunion of the 1982 Brewers – the city’s last World Series team. Bernard, who pitched 47 games in relief that season, will re-join the Rainiers on Wednesday.
Pat was the first pitching coach of the Rattlers back in 1995.
There was also this at the Mariner site the other day:
In-house changes: Frank Mattox, the Mariners' director of player development the past three years, is leaving that position and returning to scouting. He has been in the organization for the past 14 years. Greg Hunter, the Mariners' director of Minor League operations, and Hide Sueyoshi, the assistant director of international operations, will take on additional duties in the player development department.
