Braves: May 19, 1957

The '57 Braves lost 6-3 to the New York Giants on May 19. Strong relief pitching by Johnny Antonelli and a good offensive day for catcher Ray Katt gave New York the win.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the second on a bases loaded walk issued by Brave starter Bob Buhl.

Milwaukee doubled up in the fourth inning to take a lead. Doubled by eddie Matthews, Joe Adcock, and Johnny Logan resulted in two runs. Billy Bruton singled in Logan and the Braves had the lead against Giant starter Al Worthington.

But, Buhl got into trouble in the sixth. He walked the leadoff batter and Willie Mays -- you may have heard of him -- tripled to drive in the run. Mays scored on a double play ball to tie the game.

Katt broke the tie with a two-run single in the top of the seventh and the Giants tacked on an insurance run in the ninth.

Complete box score and play-by-play are HERE.

The loss has the Braves at 18-10. They trail the Reds by two games in the NL race.

I think the Braves were supposed to play the Giants on May 20, but the game must have been rained out. Retrosheet has the Braves with an off day after a one game series against New York. Unless the schedule was a lot different back in those days.

Anyway, off day for the '57 Braves on May 20.
