ABOUT FRIDAY: The Timber Rattlers were shutout 11-0 on one hit by four Lansing Lugnut pitchers. Nate Starner pitched five no-hit innings with two walks and eight strikeouts for the win. Matt Liuzza supplied most of the offense with a three-run double in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fifth. Travis Snider homered and scored three runs for the Lugnuts.
LO-NE HIT: Kuo Hui Lo had the only hit of the game for the Rattlers. His lead off single in the bottom of the sixth inning came off reliever Edward Rodriguez. That single extended Lo’s hitting streak to eleven games. He is 14-for-40 (.350) during the streak. This is the longest hitting streak of the season by a Timber Rattler.
OTHER RUNNERS: Lo reached on a dropped popup in the first inning. Starner retired the next eleven batters before issuing a two-out walk to Carlos Peguero in the fourth. Alex Liddi drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth against Starner. After Lo’s single in the sixth, Rodriguez, Seth Overbey, and Paul Phillips retired the final twelve Rattler batters in the game.
SECOND OF THE WEEK: The Rattlers were not shutout in the first 34 games of the 2007 season. Yesterday was the second time in the last four games Wisconsin did not score in a game. On Monday, May 14 at Kane County the Rattlers lost 3-0 to the Cougars.
SECOND OF THE SEASON: Yesterday was also the second time this season that the Rattlers managed just one hit in a game. Leury Bonilla broke up a no-hit bid by the Dayton Dragons on April 30 with a one-out solo home run.
LARGE MARGIN: The 11-0 loss was the worst shutout loss suffered by the Timber Rattlers since a 13-0 loss to the Swing of the Quad Cities on June 25, 2005.
UP THE LADDER: Rattler reliever Steve Uhlmansiek was promoted to High Desert, Seattle’s California League affiliate, before yesterday’s game. Taking his place on the roster will be reliever Drew Fiorenza. Fiorenza was a 15th round pick of Seattle in the 2006 draft out of the University of Clemson.
ON THE SHELF: Reliever Natividad Dilone was placed on the disabled list earlier this week.
OFF THE LIST: Outfielder Greg Halman’s three-game suspension was reduced to two games and he was in the lineup for the Timber Rattlers yesterday.
OPPOSING STARTER: Zach Dials was Toronto’s 26th round pick in the 2006 draft out of the University of Kentucky. He was 1-1 with a save and a 3.97ERA in 21 games for the Wildcats. Dials appeared in three games (all in relief) for Pulaski in the Appalachian League and picked up a save after signing with the Blue Jays. He was promoted to Auburn in the New York-Penn League and went 4-3 with three saves and a 1.89ERA in 15 games (five starts). Dials has lost three straight starts for the Lugnuts. In his last outing, he gave up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings in a loss at South Bend. In May, Dials is 0-3 with a 7.07ERA. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
