Storm punish JetHawks, 30-0
The box score is HERE.
The relevant passage from the above story:
Matt Antonelli and Kyle Blanks fueled a near-record 28-hit attack Friday as the Lake Elsinore Storm pounded the Lancaster JetHawks, 30-0, at Clear Channel Stadium.
Antonelli and Blanks each had six hits and combined to score 11 runs. Yordany Ramirez collected a career-high seven RBIs, while Chad Huffman went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs. Craig Cooper also homered twice for Lake Elsinore (22-20), which fell one hit short of tying the single-game California League record.
The first five hitters in the Storm lineup -- Antonelli, Cooper, David Freese, Blanks and Huffman -- combined to go 22-for-32 with five homers, six doubles, 19 RBIs and 24 runs scored. The Cal League mark for runs in a game is 34, set by Fresno on May 23, 1947, against Ventura.
The headline from the Antelope Valley Press: Worst Loss Ever; There will not be a comic book guy reference because of this:
It just kept getting worse for the JetHawks Friday night at The Hangar.
And then it became downright scary.
Trailing, 22-0, in the eighth inning, Chad Huffman slapped yet another gapper deep in the JetHawks outfield. Center fielder Yahmed Yema and left fielder Bubba Bell both tracked the ball at full speed, all the way to the warning track and neither gave way in a game that had long been decided.
Yema, who received the collision's lesser blow, jumped up and jogged over to the loose ball about 15 feet away, threw it in and then immediately began waving for help as Bell remained on the ground in obvious pain against the outfield fence.
"It was just two guys going all-out for the ball," Yema said. "But I heard him (groan) when we hit. I went back to him and he was trying to say something to me, but I couldn't understand it. I just started waving for the trainer."
The injury appeared as serious as Yema suggested with manager Chad Epperson and trainer Jon Jochim racing to the outfield along with, eventually, the rest of the JetHawks infield.
After the game, Jochim said he couldn't comment on any injuries. The center fielder said he was fine except for a cut on his right forearm.
"When we hit I got kind of dazed," he said. "But then I got up and heard him."
Bell was carted off the field and taken to the hospital for examination. Yema said the injury seemed to be in Bell's side or abdomen and minorleaguebaseball.com reported a "neck/shoulder injury" drove Bell from the game.
