Game Notes -- 8/3

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Dragons beat the Timber Rattlers 8-1. Dayton hitters slugged four home runs and of their fourteen hits, eight were for extra bases. Alexander Smit pitched 6-2/3 innings of shutout ball for the win.

HOMER ROLL: Dayton got home runs from Justin Turner, Logan Parker, Juan Francisco, and Zack Cozart. The Dragons now have 81 home runs this season. They are second in the Midwest League in that category, behind only the 85 long balls hit by Cedar Rapids this season.

WIDE OPEN: Turner homered with two outs in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie. The Dragons scored an unearned run in the fifth. Parker homered to start the sixth. Rattler starting pitcher Anthony Varvaro left the game with a runner at first and one out in the sixth. Eddy Rodriguez doubled home that runner for a 4-0 lead. Juan Francisco hit his third homer off Rattler pitching this season in the seventh inning for a 5-0 advantage.

FIRST TIMER: Cozartt’s three run homer, his third hit of the game, was in the bottom of the eighth inning and it was his first professional home run.

AVOIDING THE SHUTOUT: Jamie McOwen singled in Jair Fernandez with two out in the top of the ninth inning for the lone Wisconsin run. The Rattlers have been shutout seven times this season.

STREAK CONTINUES: Since June 12, Rattler infielder Reed Eastley has reached base in 38 consecutive games. Eastley extended his streak with a fourth inning double last night. This is the longest streak of its kind in the Midwest League this season.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM: Catcher Israel Nunez joined the Timber Rattlers last night. He takes the place of Juan Beltran. Beltran was placed on the disabled list after being hit on the head by a pitch in the second inning of Tuesday’s game. Nunez was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mariners in 2005 out of Mexico. Nunez played for the Mariner team in the Dominican Summer League in 2005 and Seattle’s Venezuelan Summer League affiliate in 2006. He hit 324-3-12 in the VSL in ’06. Nunez started the 2007 season with the Arizona League Mariners and was hitting .277-0-3 in 16 games before joining the Timber Rattlers.

OPPOSING STARTER: Jamie Arneson was the 16th round pick of the Reds in the 2006 draft out of Bakersfield Community College. Arneson was 2-1 with a 3.35ERA in 17 games (8 starts) for Billings in the Pioneer League after signing. In his last start, Arneson beat the Peoria Chiefs with five innings of shutout ball. He allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out five for the victory on July 28. Tonight is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
