Game Notes -- 8/5

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers outlasted the Wizards with a 6-5 win in 12 innings. Jamie McOwen doubled in the go ahead run with a double. Blake Ochoa knocked in McOwen with a single. Keith Renaud picked up the win with 4-1/3 innings of relief. Leury Bonilla came off the bench to get the final out –with a strikeout – for the save.

LOSS OF CONTROL: The Rattlers had a 4-2 lead with two outs and none on base in the bottom of the sixth. Then, Wisconsin starting pitcher Kyle Parker walked Keith Conlon and Matt Stocco. Rollie Gibson relieved and walked Robert Perry to load the bases and Cedric Hunter to force in a run. Drew Fiorenza entered the game and walked Jon Schemmel on four pitches to force in the tying run. Five straight walks.

BULLPEN: Timber Rattler relievers have worked 16 innings out of the 25 innings played in the first two games of the series.

THE VERY LONG NIGHT OF KEITH RENAUD: The 10th round pick of the Mariners in the 2007 draft threw over 70 pitches in 4-1/3 innings for his longest outing as a professional. Renaud did not allow a run until the bottom of the twelfth. He walked three and struck out three. The win was Renaud’s first as a professional.

SAVING THE DAY: Bonilla, who has started games at every infield position, left, right, and DH; and has entered games to catch twice this season, relieved Renaud in the bottom of the twelfth with the tying run at first. He balked that runner to second, but struck out Conlon on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.

THE LAST TIME: The last Timber Rattler position player to get into a game was Robby Hudson on August 5, 2006. Hudson worked a scoreless inning against the Beloit Snappers.

FOUR!: Jamie McOwen had four hits, including two doubles.

SECOND CHANCE: McOwen appeared to have flown out in the twelfth inning with the go ahead run at first. However, a balk was called on Fort Wayne pitcher Jodam Rivera to move the runner into scoring position. Rivera started the game at second base for the Wizards. McOwen doubled into the left field corner to drive in the run.

HELPING HAND: Kuo Hui Lo’s outfield assist in the bottom of the tenth was his team leading ninth of the season.

OVERTIME: The Rattlers are 7-1 in eight extra-inning games this season.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Jair Fernandez went on the disabled list before the game last night. Catcher Blake Ochoa joined the Timber Rattlers from Everett in the Northwest League. Ochoa started the season with the Florida Marlins South Atlantic League team in Greensboro. He came over to the Mariners in a mid -July trade that involved former Rattler Danny Santin.

OPPOSING STARTER: Stevie Delabar was the 29th round pick of the Padres in 2003 out of Volunteer State Junior College in Tennessee. He was 8-9 with a 3.41 ERA in 27 starts last season for the Wizards. Delabar started the ’07 season with Lake Elsinore in the California League and went 2-6 with a 5.59ERA in 20 relief appearances before returning to the Wizards in early June. In his last start for Fort Wayne, Delabar went 2-1/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits and four hit batters. Delabar made two starts against Wisconsin last season and he went 0-1 with a 3.72ERA.
