Game Notes -- 8/9

ABOUT WEDNESDAY: The Rattlers beat the Snappers 5-4. The game was tied 4-4 until Ron Garth singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Garth homered and knocked in three runs for the Rattlers.

GOING DEEP AGAIN: Garth has hit a home run in four straight games. He is the first Timber Rattler to hit a home run in four consecutive games. Garth also has hit six home runs in the last seven games.

ESCAPE ARTIST: For the second start in a row Timber Rattler pitcher Nolan Gallagher got out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning. On August 3 at Fort Wayne, Gallagher loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of walks and a single, but did not allow a run. Yesterday, the Snappers loaded the bases on a single, a double, and a walk with one out. But, Gallagher did not a let a run score.

OUT IN FRONT: Kuo Hui Lo drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first and Garth followed with his home run to give Wisconsin a 2-0 lead.

TWO MORE: Gavin Dickey stepped to the plate in the fifth with runners on second and third. His fly ball to left-center was deep enough to score Alex Liddi from third. Reed Eastley tagged and went to third. The throw also went to third, but no Snapper was covering the base and Eastley hustled home with the run for a 4-0 advantage.

BACK CAME BELOIT: The Snappers scored a pair of runs in the sixth off Gallagher and two more off Drew Fiorenza in the seventh to tie the game 4-4.

HELP FROM ABOVE: Lo led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a high fly ball to deep center. Beloit centerfielder Joe Benson lost the ball in the sun and Lo raced into third base with a triple. Three pitches later, Garth lined a single over the head of the drawn-in outfield for the game winning hit.

VERY FAMILIAR: In the ten games between the Rattlers and Snappers this season, there have been five “walk-off” wins. The first four “walk-offs” were: Greg Halman singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh in a Rattler win on April 16; The Snappers scored the winning run on a ninth inning error on April 17; Chris Parmelee drew a bases loaded walk to force in the winning run on July 17; and Eli Tintor hit a game-ending home run on August 19.

BACK IN ACTION: Juan Beltran was activated from the disabled list yesterday and doubled in his first at bat. Beltran went on the DL after being hit in the head with a pitch at Dayton on July 31. To make room for Beltran on the active roster, Israel Nunez was sent to Seattle’s affiliate in the Arizona League.

OPPOSING STARTER: Cole Devries was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota in August of 2006. He did not pitch professionally in 2006, but was 7-3 with a 2.42ERA for the Golden Gophers and earned second team All-Big Ten honors before signing with the Twins. In his last start, Devries allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in a no decision at Dayton on August 4. He has made a pair of starts against the Timber Rattlers this season and picked up no decisions both times. In 12-1/3 innings against Wisconsin, Devries has given up fourteen hits and four runs (three earned). On July 19 against the Rattlers, Devries gave up eleven hits and two runs with nine strikeouts over eight innings. The Snappers won the game in the bottom of the ninth after Devries left the game.
