ABOUT WEDNESDAY: Dayton busted a close game wide open with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. Juan Francisco’s grand slam was the big hit in the inning. The Dragons beat the Rattlers 10-1. The win was Dayton’s fifth straight. The loss was Wisconsin’s fifth straight.
UNEARNED: Three errors and two passed balls charges against the Rattlers led to seven unearned runs for the Dragons.
STILL NOT SHUTOUT: Rattler first baseman Andy Hargrove homered with one out in the eighth inning to account for the only run of the game for Wisconsin. The Rattlers have not been shutout this season.
IT WAS CLOSE: Dayton starter Jordan Smith tossed six shutout innings and allowed just a first inning single to Carlos Peguero and a walk to Hargrove in the second. Two other Rattlers reached on Dayton errors with Smith on the hill.
IN THE BEGINNING: The three starters for Dayton in this series (Smith, Sean Watson, and Travis Webb) have combined for the following pitching line: 18IP, 5H, 4R, 0ER, 2BB, 22K. All three have picked up victories. The three Timber Rattler starters in the series (Anthony Varvaro, Nathan Adcock, and Kyle Parker) have this for a pitching line: 16IP, 12H, 11R, 7ER, 4BB, 15K.
A FRANCISCO TREAT: The Dragon third baseman has hit a home run in each of the last two games. He has driven in eight runs over the last two Dayton victories.
STRIKEOUTS ALL AROUND: Yesterday, Dayton pitchers struck out Rattler hitters 10 times and Wisconsin pitchers struck out Dragon hitters 13 times. The two pitching staffs have combined for 64 strikeouts in the first three games of the series.
4-18: The Rattlers have lost 18 of their first 22 games this season. Since 2000, this is the second worst start to a half by a Rattler team. The 2002 team was 2-20 in their first 22 games of the second half.
OPPOSING STARTER: Daryl Thompson was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos out of high school in the 8th round of the 2003 draft. He was traded to the Reds in July of 2006. In four seasons before 2007, Thompson was 7-15 with a 3.96 ERA in 57 career games (50 starts). In his last start this season, Thompson allowed one hit in six shutout innings for a win at Pohlman Field against the Beloit Snappers. In 23 innings pitched in 2007, Thompson has allowed one run on eleven hits and has issued one walk while striking out 19. He is currently working on a scoreless streak that has reached 20 innings. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
