Game Notes -- 5/9

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers lost 5-3 in their first ever game against the Great Lakes Loons. Wisconsin took an early lead with two runs in the second inning. Great Lakes scored five times in the fourth inning and it was enough for the win.

BUTLER’S BACK: Timber Rattler starting pitcher Tony Butler made his first start last night after a brief stint on the disabled list. Butler pitched two perfect innings and struck out a pair.

THEIR SACRIFICES: Carlos Triunfel and Juan Beltran both executed sacrifice bunts last night. Triunfel and Beltran each have two sac bunts this season. Wisconsin’s second run of the second inning scored on a sacrifice fly by Ougi Diaz.

PEGUERO FILES: Rattler DH Carlos Peguero extended his hitting streak to five games with a triple in the third inning. He is 8-for-18 during the streak and has raised his batting average from .121 to .235.

IN THE FOURTH: Rattler reliever Steve Richard allowed six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Loons rallied to take the lead. An RBI double by Scott Van Slyke drove in the go ahead run. Trayvon Robinson knocked in the final two runs of the inning for the Loons. Three of the runs scored in the inning were unearned because of an error.

STRIKE UP THE BAND: Wisconsin reliever Justin Souza pitched a scoreless eighth inning. In his last five outings, Souza has allowed one earned run over six innings.

NEVER SAY DIE: Wisconsin had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth inning. The Rattlers had two out and nobody on base when Leury Bonilla was hit by a pitch. Kuo Hui Lo’s triple knocked in Bonilla to get Wisconsin to within 5-3. Juan Beltran grounded out to end the game.

CLOSE: Of Wisconsin’s 22 loses this year, 11 have been by three or fewer runs.

OPPOSING STARTER: Thomas Melgarejo was signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent out of Mexico. Last season, Melgarejo was 3-1 with a 3.60ERA for the Gulf Coast League Dodgers. He made nine appearances (seven starts) in the GCL. The Swing of the Quad Cities beat Melgarejo in his last start for the Loons. On May 3 at John O’Donnell Stadium, he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits over seven innings. He struck out six with two walks. This is his first start against the Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
