Game Notes -- 8/12

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Whitecaps took advantage of four Timber Rattler errors and tripled three times in the fifth inning for a 7-2 win. The win extended West Michigan’s winning streak to five games and ended the Rattler’s win streak at four games.

RELAPSE: The Rattler defense committed three errors that led to three unearned runs for the Whitecaps in the fourth inning. The game was tied 1-1 when James Skelton reached on an error to start the inning. An errant pickoff throw with one out sent Skelton around to third. After a two-out walk and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, a dropped throw to first allowed those runners to score and put the Whitecaps in front 3-1. West Michigan added another run in the inning with a single to go in front 4-1. During the four game winning streak that was ended last night, the Rattlers committed a total of two errors.

THREE TIMES THREE: Scott Sizemore, Jeramy Laster, and Santo De Leon all tripled in the fifth inning. Sizemore hit his to start the frame and scored on a single by Brennan Boesch. Laster followed with an RBI triple. One out later, De Leon tripled and it was a 7-1 game.

KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON: Both Joe White and Alex Liddi went 1-for-4 to keep their hitting streaks going. White is currently on a ten-game hit streak and is 15-for-35 (.429). Liddi is on a nine gamer and is 13-for-38 (.342).

THE EAST IS A BEAST: The Rattlers are 14-31 against the Eastern Division this season. Wisconsin is just 5-16 at home against the other division.

BIG CROWD: The Timber Rattlers drew a crowd of 7,243, their largest home attendance of the season, last night.


SLIGHT CHANGE IN THE ROTATION: Keith Renaud will make the start for Kyle Parker on Tuesday for the Timber Rattlers.

OPPOSING STARTER: Jeff Gerbe was a 16th round pick of the Tigers in the 2006 draft out of Michigan State where he was 4-7 with a 5.38ERA in 13 starts. Gerbe spent his first pro season with Oneonta of the New York-Penn League and was 1-4 with a 5.08ERA. He started the season in the Whitecap bullpen and picked up a pair of saves. He made one start for Erie of the Double-A Eastern League on June 9 and got a no decision against New Hampshire despite allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings. In his last start for the Whitecaps, the Swing of the Quad Cities beat Gerbe on August 6. He allowed five runs on nine hits over 2-2/3 innings. Gerbe faced the Rattlers in a two inning relief stint on April 24. He did not allow a hit or a run and struck out three.
