Game Notes -- 8/13

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Rattlers beat the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-4 in ten innings. Ron Garth doubled to start the game winning rally. West Michigan reliever Casey Fien fielded a bunt off the bat of Alex Liddi and threw wildly to third. Garth strolled home with the run.

GETTING OFFENSIVE: Garth had two doubles and scored a pair of runs on Sunday. He went 9-for-25 with four homers, six RBI, and eight runs scored since last Monday. For his performance last week, Garth was named Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week.

EXTENDING: Joe White’s RBI single in the sixth inning put the Timber Rattlers up 4-1. It also gave him an eleven-game hitting streak. White is 16-for-39 (.410) during the string. The longest hitting streak by a Timber Rattler this season is a 12-gamer put together by Kuo Hui Lo in May.

A MAN OF QUALITY: Wisconsin starting pitcher Ricky Orta allowed three runs (two earned) over 6-1/3 innings pitched. Orta has made four consecutive quality starts (At least six innings with three or fewer earned runs allowed). Orta has made eight quality starts for the Rattlers.

SLIPPED AWAY: Steve Richard entered the game to protect a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, but could not hold off the Whitecaps. Brandon Timm, who had three hits and three stolen bases, tripled when a flyball dropped in in left-center to lead off the ninth. Santo De Leon followed with a double to tie the game. Richard got out of the ninth with the game tied 4-4. This was the 18th blown save of the season by the Timber Rattler bullpen.

THEY LOVE OT! The Rattlers are 8-1 in extra inning games this season. Wisconsin is 3-0 at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN EVERY DAY: The Whitecaps committed two errors yesterday. They have the fewest number of errors in the Midwest League this season with 112 in 119 games. West Michigan is the only team in the Midwest League averaging less than one error per game.

STILL PERFECT: The Rattlers are 4-0 in game with Blake Ochoa as the starting catcher. The Rattlers also won a game in which Ochoa game on as a defensive replacement.

OPPOSING STARTER: Charles Furbush was the fourth round pick of the Tigers in the 2007 draft out of Louisiana State University. He was 3-9 with a 4.95 ERA in 16 starts for the Tigers this season. After signing with the Tigers, Furbush made four appearances – three starts – for their Gulf Coast League affiliate. Furbush was 2-0 with a 2.81ERA and struck out 23 over 16 innings. He made his West Michigan debut on July 21 with a win at Burlington. In his last outing, Furbush got a no decision at Clinton. On August 7, the LumberKings scored two unearned runs on five hits over 5-2/3 innings. Furbush struck out three and walked two. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
