Game Notes -- 8/4

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers defeated the Wizards 9-8 in thirteen innings. Alex Liddi drove in the go ahead run with a two-out single in the top of the thirteenth. Joe Kantakevich pitched four scoreless innings for the victory.

BACK AND FORTH: Wisconsin had a led 1-0. The Wizards took a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin tied the game 2-2. Fort Wayne went in front 6-2. The Rattlers pulled to within 6-5 and then went in front 8-6. Fort Wayne tied the game 8-8 with a pair of runs in the seventh.

WALKING THE LINE: Rattler starter Nolan Gallagher walked six in 3-1/3 innings before leaving the game. That matches the most walks issued by a Rattler pitcher this season. Six Rattler pitchers combined to walk 12 Wizard batters last night.

BIG COMEBACK: The Rattlers trailed 6-2 after the Wizards scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. By rallying for the win, Wisconsin matched the largest deficit they have overcome for a victory this season. The Rattlers trailed Great Lakes 4-0 on May 9 at Midland and rallied for a 6-4 win.

POWER SURGE: Reed Eastley, Gavin Dickey, and Ron Garth homered last night. The Rattlers have hit four home runs in the last two games. The recent upswing comes after a homerless drought of 73-1/3 innings.

SAVE OPPORTUNITY: Cedric Hunter’s two-out, two run single off Harold Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game 8-8 for a blown save. The Rattler bullpen is 19-for-33 in save opportunities this season.

OUT AT THE PLATE: Both teams threw out a runner at the plate late in the game. Jon Schemmel tried to score from second on an infield singe in the bottom of the eighth, but Joe White threw him out. Reed Eastley tried to score from second on a single by White in the top of the ninth, but Cedric Hunter threw out Eastley at the plate.

WHITE NOISE: White had three hits and three RBI for the Rattlers last night.

THE LONGEST OUTING: Kantakevich’s four-inning outing last night was his longest as a professional.

THE LONGEST NIGHT: The game time of 4 hours and 33 minutes made last night the longest game -- by time -- of the season for the Rattlers. Wisconsin also played a 13 inning game on June 1 in a 2-1 win over the Burlington Bees.

OVERTIME: The Rattlers are 6-1 in seven extra-inning games this season.

OPPOSING STARTER: Brandon Gomes was the 17th round pick of the Padres in 2007 out of Tulane. Gomes was 7-6 with a 3.92ERA in 16 starts for the Green Wave in his final season. He made four relief appearances for the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League in his professional debut. Gomes was 1-0 and allowed no runs on one hit over 6-1/3 innings for the Emeralds. He made his Wizard debut on July 1 as a reliever. In his last start for Fort Wayne, Gomes allowed four runs (three earned) over seven innings against Beloit on July 30. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.
