The '97 Mariners began a series in Baltimore on May 8. They had Randy Johnson on the mound. Baltimore countered with Mike Mussina. The teams combined for sixteen runs, but it was the O's with the majority in a 13-3 win.
Baltimore led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Chris Hoiles hit a three run home run with two outs in that inning to put the Orioles up 5-1.
Josias Manzanillo entered in the seventh and gave up three runs (two of them after a Joey Cora error).
Russ David homered off Mussina in the eighth. Mussina left after a single by Cora. 7 innings, 5 hits, 8 strikeouts for Mussina. Cora scored an unearned run after Alex Rodriguez grounded into a double play.
Hoiles and Brady Anderson both homered in the Oriole eighth with a Tony Tarasco RBI double and a two run single by Pat Bordick in between for the final score.

The '97 M's are 19-13 after this loss. They are in first place and still two games in front of the Rangers in the AL West.
Game two of the Series at Camden Yards is May 9.
