Braves: May 12, 1957

The '57 Braves ended their 16 game road trip with a doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals.

In game one, the Cardinals scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning off Lew Burdette. But, the Braves rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Hank Aaron.

The game was delayed by rain and hail at the end of the fourth. The game resumed less than thirty minutes later.

Aaron started the rally to put the Braves ahead in the top of the sixth with a leadoff walk. Eddie Matthews singled and Aaron took third. Joe Adcock drove in Aaron with a single. Billy Bruton's sac fly knocked in Matthews and the Braves were up 4-2. That was enough for Burdette. The Brave starter went all nine innings for the win.

Then, the Braves dropped the hammer with six runs in the top of the fourth. Billy Bruton drove in a run with a single, Danny O'Connell knocked in two runs with a double, and Matthews hit a three-run homer for an 8-0 lead.

The Cardinals scored one time in the fourth and three times in the fifth, but Milwaukee pulled away with two more runs in the sixth. Aaron singled in the first run and Adcock singled in the last run of the road trip for a 10-4 advantage.

Taylor Phillips pitched five scoreless innings in relief for the win.
