August 21, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers won their fourth straight game with a 9-4 victory over the Kernels. Brock Kjeldgaard homered and drove in three runs. Corey Kemp, Sean McCraw, and Josh Prince each had two-run doubles to account for the other Wisconsin runs. RJ Seidel pitched five solid innings for the win.

THREE AWAY: Kjeldgaard’s homer was his 19th of the season. He is currently tied with Mike Wilson (2005) for third on the single season home run list in Rattlers history. Juan Silvestre (1999) and Matt Hagen (2003) share the record at 21.

JOINING THE CLUB: Kemp’s double was his 31st of the season. He is tied with four other Timber Rattlers: Luis Tinoco (1996), Greg Connors (1998), TJ Bohn (2003), and Joe Dunigan (2008) for eighth place on the single season doubles list. Justin Leone (2000) is next on the list with 32. The franchise doubles record was set in 1999 by Bo Robinson, who had 50 that season.

RED HOT AUGUST: Kjeldgaard’s double in the first inning extended his current hitting streak to nine games. He is 15-for-38 (.395) during this streak. He has tied Juan Sanchez, Pete Fatse, and Erik Miller for the longest hitting streak on the team this season. Kjeldgaard has hit safely in 17 of 19 games this month. In August, he is 28-for-78 (.359) and has raised his average from .213 to .241.

STOP IN THE NAME OF McCRAW: McCraw threw out two of three runners attempting stolen bases last night. McCraw is 37-for-103 (.359) in tossing out would-be base stealers this season. He is ranked fourth in the Midwest League in that category.

THE ‘W’ CLUB: Seidel’s victory was his first as a Timber Rattler. He walked three and struck out four. Seidel pitched four scoreless innings before allow two runs in the fifth inning.

A NOTE ABOUT ATTENDANCE: The crowd of 4,253 for last night’s Timber Rattlers game pushed the season attendance for Wisconsin to 223,724 for an average of 3,608. The franchise record for single season attendance is 233,797. If the Rattlers just draw their average attendance of the last 6 home games they will have a total attendance of 245,372.

WHAT ABOUT THIS LEVEL? There are six Rattlers on the active roster that spent at least some time with the West Virginia Power last season. West Virginia was the Class-A affiliate of the Brewers in the South Atlantic League from 2005-2008. The former Power players are outfielder Michael Vass and pitchers Nick Tyson, Evan Frederickson, Corey Frerichs, RJ Seidel, and Wily Peralta. The Power were 32-37 in the first half, but rallied for a division championship in the second half with a record of 45-25.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels are the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They are in the Midwest League playoffs as the first half Western Division Wild Card after finishing the first half with a record of 40-30 and edging out Clinton for the spot with a tiebreaker. The Kernels are 28-25 in the second half.

SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 6-7 against the Kernels in 2009. Wisconsin went 2-6 against Cedar Rapids in the first half, including 1-3 in a four game series at Time Warner Cable Field in early June. The Rattlers took three out of four from the Kernels at Perfect Game Field August 11 through August 14.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .241 as a team. They have scored 497 runs (4.0/game) and hit 58 home runs. The Kernels are hitting .254 as a team. They have scored 593 runs (4.8/game) and hit 57 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.25 while allowing a total of 595 runs (4.8/game). Cedar Rapids pitchers have a team ERA of 3.80 while allowing 527 runs (4.3/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 140 errors. The Kernels defense has committed 119 errors. Wisconsin is 36-29 at home this season. Cedar Rapids is 33-30 on the road in 2009.

CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: RHP Tyler Chatwood was a second round pick of the Angels out of Redlands (CA) East valley High School in the 2008 draft. He was 1-2 with a 3.08ERA for the AZL Angels in his first pro stop. In his start prior to this evening, Chatwood won his second straight start with a victory over the Clinton LumberKings on August 16. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six over five innings. Chatwood is 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 10 second half starts. He has made two appearances against the Timber Rattlers this season. On June 2 at Time Warner Cable Field, Chatwood tossed 5-2/3 scoreless innings and picked up the victory in a 1-0 Kernels win. Chatwood allowed two hits, walked six, and struck out seven. He beat the Rattlers at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids on August 11. He tossed six shutout innings and allowed two hits and walked two while striking out six. Chatwood has walked 55 batters this season and is tied for fifth in the Midwest League for the most walks issued by a pitcher in 2009.
