Q: The Brewers drafted pitcher Eric Arnett, outfielder Kentrail Davis, and pitcher Kyle Heckathorn with their first three picks in the 2009 draft. Have you heard anything about them possibly starting the 2010 season with the Timber Rattlers?

A: All three of these players were in instructional league and I had a chance to see them in games and workouts. They are very talented players that all have some college experience. With that said, I feel that the decision where these players will be placed will depend on how they perform in spring training and what the needs are in Brevard County. So, there is a possibility.

Also in the interrogation: Instructs, Indiana, London 2012, Boilermakers' basketball, and the dream Super Bowl of Jeff Isom.

The Packers' stunning last second loss to the Steelers in Pittsburgh last night, sent me to my usual therapy: Flipping around the channels while darkly muttering to myself. Little secret: When the Packers lose -- especially like that -- I can't watch football the rest of the day. Unfortunately, my therapy made me miss a delicious Vikings loss to the Panthers that had a little whipped cream on top. Instead, I watched a History Channel program about snipers. Then, I stopped at MLB Network and found their Greatest Games program. It was Game Six of the 2002 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Anaheim Angels.

That means Mehring Monday was available yesterday and I am posting about it now. Topic: Appleton Baseball Hall of Famer Zoilo Versalles. he was a Fox Cities Fox in 1959, when Appleton baseball was affiliated with the original Washington Senators.

Follow his career from Appleton to his MVP award with the Minnesota Twins to his many moves around baseball late in his career.

Just a reminder

that yesterday was a Mehring Monday.

Now that the 2009 season is safely in the books, we are officially in off-season mode here at the ballpark. Now is also the time when we get one of our more frequent off-season questions. What do you guys do when the season ends?

A common misconception that some people have is that we shut the stadium down and no one is at Time Warner Cable Field from October until March. Oh, no. There is always someone here Monday through Friday from 9 am until 5 pm. There is always a lot to do.

While you are being patient

The bus just got in to the hotel in Burlington and I'm getting my bearings. While you are waiting for the day of posting, head over to the Timber Rattlers site for the latest Mehring Monday.

Just another Mehring Monday...rerun

Well, it's not a rerun of a Mehring Monday. It's just a rerun of something that I wrote for PLAYBALL! last year. It fits though.

Tony Kubek, an Appleton resident went into the Broadcasters win of the Hall of Fame and the article was written after Goose Gossage was elected about two other members of Cooperstown who spent some time in Appleton.

Travis Jackson had been in baseball for many years by the time he became the manager of the Appleton Papermakers of the Wisconsin State League. He was a shortstop known for hustle and clutch hits on the New York Giant teams from 1921-1936. He was a coach for the Giants and also managed in the minors for teams like the Jersey City Giants, the Jackson Senators, the Tampa Smokers, the Owensboro Oilers, the Bluefield Blue-Grays, and the Hartford Chiefs before making it to Appleton in 1952. In two seasons at Goodland Field, Jackson compiled a record of 106-137.

Earl Weaver is best known for his only managerial stop in the major leagues. Weaver was the man in charge of The Oriole Way from 1968 through 1982 and again from 1985-1986. His Orioles won the AL East 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1979. They made it to the World Series from 1969-1971 and again in 1979 with a championship over the Cincinnati Reds in 1970.
