The Foxes committed five errors in the game and the Dodgers scored seven runs in the fourth inning. BUT, the Three-I League Champions rallied for the win. Charlie Johnson had a big three-run home run for the Foxes. Also for Fox Cities, Ed Saverine went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

The Foxes are 81-55 on the season. There are three games left in the season.

Twins, fog end reign of Foxes

The 3-year reign of the Appleton Foxes as Midwest League champions officially ended as the clock struck midnight Thursday, and just about everyone was long gone from Goodland Field.

With the Twins leading 4-3, the game had been suspended after the seventh inning that would have done Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles proud.

After holding up the game for more than 2-1/2 hours, the umpires ruled that conditions hadn't improved enough. So they called the game, bringing a strange and disappointing conclusion to the FOxes' otherwise stellar season.

"Fog is a weather condition just like rain," said Jim Cutler, vice president of the Midwest League. "We waited a reasonable length of time and treated it just like a rainout. I talked with Bill Walters (the ML president) on the phone to make sure that there was no special rule for playoff games. I was told that there was no special rule for this situation."

Earlier in the day the park was drenched by 2 inches of rain. The efforts of groundskeepers Rick Raasch and Ray Remmel along with Foxes manager Sal Rende, pitching coach Mitch Lukevics, trainer Ken Koch and players Greg Tarnow and Ken Reed got the field into reasonable playing condition. Despite the work, wet spots caused treacherous footing in the outfield.

"Of course we're disappointed to lose," said Rende. "But lose we did. But, there are no losers in this (locker) room. We knew that we would be competitive coming into the season. We did better than we thought we would after spring training. This team came out and did the job every day. They're also good people, and that says a lot about them and their character."

COMMENTARY: What struck me most vividly was the manner in which the Foxes reacted to defeat. There were no alibis, no excuses. Rende and his players congratulated victorious Kenosha and wished the Twins well in the league championship series with Peoria.

Those of us who followed the Foxes this season were priviledged to watch champions in every sense of the word.

Tony Menendez allowed an unearned run and struck out five to tied the best-of-three series with the Twins at one win a piece.

The first hit he allowed was on a two-out, pinch-hit RBI double by Tom Scaletta in the top of the eighth inning. Mike Ryan scored on the play. He had reached on an error to start the inning.

Had he tossed the no-no, it would have been the first no-hitter at Goodland Field since Larry Monroe no-hit Cedar Rapids in a 7-inning game on August 22, 1975.

The offense in this game for the Foxes was supplied early. Jim Winters doubled in two runs in the first and that was enough for Menendez.

It should be noted that in the other MWL Semifinal, the Beloit Brewers beat Peoria 9-2 to even that series at a win each. Frank Mattox went 4-for-5 with a double, homer, and four RBI to lead Beloit to the win.

Tough day for the Three-I League Champions in Green Bay. Dick McLaughlin hit a grand slam in the second inning for the Dodgers in their game one win.

In game two, the Foxes were up 8-1 after they scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Boog Powell hit a three-run homer in that inning, but the Dodgers came all the way back...and then some.

The Foxes are 80-54 after being swept in this doubleheader.

The headline from the Post-Crescent on 9/4/85 says it best after Appleton lost game one of a best-of-three series: Foxes' backs pinned to wall

Edwin Correa, who won 13 games during the regular season for Appleton, took the loss. He allowed eight runs on seven hits and five walks in 4-2/3 innings.

The offense was handcuffed by 15-game winner Alan Sontag. Well, not completely handcuffed, the Foxes had 10 hits off Sontag in 7-1/3 innings, but they did not have a big breakthrough until the eighth inning when they were already down 14-1.

The article does point out a positive factoid: The Foxes were 7-2 in nine games at Goodland Field against the Twins.

The Foxes ended the 1985 season with a loss at Madison on Labor Day. Pete Venturini hit his second home run of the season to get Appleton on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning.

Appleton ended the season with the best record in the Midwest League at 85-54. They will open the Midwest League Playoffs at Kenosha on September 3.

This was the second to last game of the regular season for the Foxes. They tied the Muskies with a run in the top of the ninth inning on a Wes Kent sacrifice fly.

Madison won the game in the bottom of the fourteenth on a homer by John Kanter.

The Foxes are 85-53 on the season and they have one more game with the Muskies at Warner Park. The 1985 MWL playoffs begin on September 3.

Sioux City lost 10-1 to Cedar Rapids. The loss by the Soos and the win by the Foxes clinched the Three-I League Pennant for the Foxes.

This is the first pennant for an Appleton professional baseball team since 1910.

Buster Narum pitched a complete game and struck out 11 for the win. The Foxes are 80-50 on the season.

Jim Markert hit a homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game. Jim Byrd tripled in the top of the twelfth. Buck Autry singled him home.

The Muskies got a pair of runners on with one out in the bottom of the twelfth, but Mark Ruckbeil got out of the inning.

The Foxes are 85-52. They are two games left in the Midwest League season and the Foxes have clinched the best record in the MWL.

The race for the wild card cleared up a bit on August 31, 1985. Cedar Rapids and Kenosha entered the day with identical 77-59 records. Kenosha won 8-0 at Wausau. Cedar Rapids lost 6-4 at home in 12 innings to Clinton. The Twins have a one game lead for the wild card.

In game one, Foxes manager Earl Weaver was ejected from the game. I can see why after the Reds scored seven in the third and five in the sixth.

In game two, Arne Thorsland won his 13th game of the season. The story noted that the victory broke the franchise record for wins that had been set in 1959. Frank Bruckbauer won 12 for the Foxes in 1959.

The Foxes Player of the Day was Photi Anthony. He homered twice in game two and scored four runs in game one.

The Foxes magic number to clinch the Three-I League Championship is at two. They are 79-50 on the season after the action on August 30, 1960.

In game one, Jim Winters tripled in two runs in the top of the ninth inning for the extra innings victory. Dave White tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save, his 18th of the season. The winning pitcher? Oh, some guy by the name of Bobby Thigpen, who worked 2-2/3 scoreless innings in relief. The story notes that Thigpen had been called up from Sarasota earlier in the day.

Kenosha kept their wild card hopes alive with a win in the second game.

The Foxes are 84-52 on the season after the action on August 30, 1985.

The Foxes are 83-49 and clinched the pennant on their final home game of 1985.

It was noted in the Post-Crescent story that the crowd of 520 gave the Foxes an attendance of 72,860. That was good for the fourth best attendance in club history.

50 Years Ago Today

The Fox Cities Foxes had a scheduled offday. They earned it. They had been on a road trip that started on August 16, 1960 in Sioux City, Iowa. It did not end until they were rained out in Topeka, Kansas on August 25. There was a stop in Lincoln, Nebraska in there, too.

The Foxes went 6-4 on the trip, including wrapping it up with a 5-game winning streak.

Even with the off day, Fox Cities picked up a half game in the standings. Second place Sioux City lost 3-0 to the Cedar Rapids Braves.

The Foxes are 77-47 and have an 11.5 game lead over the Soos.

It was Mike's Towne & Country-WKAU Radio Night at Goodland Field and they saw the Foxes blow a 5-3 lead and - those that stuck around - got to see the Muskies score the go ahead run in the top of the fourteenth on a balk.

From the Post-Crescent game story:

Madison's Mike Walker led off the 14th with a line drive that just eluded the dive of centerfielder Jim Winters and fell for a double. after Andy Krause sacrificed him to third, Walker was waved home by the umpires when [Tony] Bartolomucci committed his balk.

"He moved, then he stepped off (the rubber). It was a balk," said Foxes manager Sal Rende. "We had some chances to win in extra innings, but we just didn't get the key hit. We'll be back tomorrow."

The second place Kenosha Twins won their game against Wausau by an 11-5 score. The Magic Number for the Foxes (82-49) to clinch the Northern Division title is one.

Monday's crowd of 4,319 gives the Foxes a season attendance of 72,340 with 1 date remaining.  The Foxes need just 248 fans to post their largest attendance since 1978.  Last season, the club drew 54,281

The Foxes come-from-ahead victory put their record at 77-47, the best in the Three-I League. Their lead over Sioux City is a very comfortable 10.5 games.

The Foxes clinched a share of the Northern Division title with this rain-shortened win on Pierce Manufacturing/WHBY Radio Night.

That five run rally by the Foxes in the first? It started with two out and none on base. From the Gary Shriver article in the 8/25 Post-Crescent:

After Jerry Bertolani walked and Tom Forrester singled, Jim Winters hit a line drive that Twins' right-fielder Howie Manzon lost in the late afternoon sun and fell in for a triple, scoring both Bertolani and Forrester. Jim Markert then singled in Winters to make the score 3-0.

Troy Thomas walked and Jim Byrd's grounder was misplayed by third baseman Tom Scaletta for an error, allowing Markert to score. Buck Autry followed with a single to drive Thomas in with the fifth run of the frame.

Also from the FOXES TALES section of the story:

In an exhibition softball game played before the start of the Foxes-Twins game, Pierce Manufacturing defeated WHBY 8-5.

A total of five players off the 1983 Foxes' Midwest League champions have played at least one game in the Major Leagues this season. Bruce Tanner, Al Jones, and John Cangelosi saw action with the White Sox, while Mike Trujillo has pitched for the Boston Red Sox and Pat Adams was with the San Francisco Giants.

The win puts the Foxes at 83-47. One more win will give the Foxes the Northern Division title.

Dean Chance went the route and the offense banged out 14 hits. Plus, the Reds committed seven errors in the game.

Jim Carver went 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the offense.

The Foxes received some welcome news from elsewhere on August 23, 1960. The Cedar Rapids Braves swept a doubleheader from Sioux City. The Foxes picked up 1.5 games over the Soos with their win in Topeka.

The Foxes are 76-47, in first place in the Three-I League, and they are 9.5 games in front of second place Sioux City.

After playing a one-game series in Madison on August 22, 1985, the Appleton Foxes were scheduled to play a one game series in Wausau on August 23, 1985.

The game at Wausau Athletic Park was rained out and since it was the final meeting of the season between the Foxes and Timbers, the game would not be made up.

Appleton is still in first place in the Northern Division of the Midwest League. They are 82-47 and will start a two game series with second place Kenosha at Goodland Field on August 24, 1985.

Fox Cities built their lead to 6-2 in the top of the seventh on back-to-back homers by Boog Powell and Pete Ward.

The Chiefs scored eight runs in the seventh inning and took a 10-6 lead.

The Foxes scored three in the eighth to make the score 10-9.

In the top of the ninth, Jim Carver hit a two run homer with one out and the Foxes were up 11-10.

The Chiefs loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, but the Foxes escaped. Jim Lehew got the win in relief.

Fox Cities is 74-47. They are in first place in the Three-I League and have an eight game lead on second place Sioux City.

It was Edwin Correa's night. He tossed a complete game two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. The only two hits allowed were a leadoff bunt single by Allen Sigler in the bottom of the first and a two out single by Joe Dunlap in the bottom of the ninth.

Correa moved his record to 13-2.

The only offense Correa needed came in the third inning. Mike Taylor doubled in a run with two outs. Then, Pete Venturini doubled in Taylor. A wild pitch and an error let Venturini come home and the Foxes were up 3-0.

Appleton is 81-47. They lead the Northern Division of the Midwest League. Second place Kenosha is 10.5 games back.

In game one, the offense had just four hits.


In game two, Boog Powell and Pete Ward hit back-to-back homers in the top of the fourth to help the Foxes take a 3-1 lead. But, the Chiefs scored three runs in the sixth off Dean Chance. Lincoln held on for the win.

Boooooooooooog was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader and drove in a pair of runs in the game. Remember, this is less than a week after he was brained by a hard ground ball at home.


The losses dropped the Foxes to 72-47. Their lead in the Three-I League dropped to just seven games over Sioux City.

Third loss in a row for the Foxes. Appleton led 3-1 heading to the bottom of the second. But, Jim Fillippi let a run score on a wild pitch, walked in another, and gave up a bases loaded triple. The insurance runs in the fifth was on Bernardo Brito's 27th homer of the season. Appleton had two runs in and runners at the corners with one out in the top of the ninth. But, a strikeout and a force out ended the game.

The Foxes are 79-46. They lead the Northern Division of the Midwest, but second place Kenosha is nine games back.

The Foxes homered three times to beat Deigo Segui for the first time in 1960. He had been 4-0 against Fox Cities up to this point in the season.


Jim Montgomery started the game off with a homer. Later in the game, Pete Ward, and Cal Ripken, Sr. homered for the Foxes.


Jim Lehew made a rare start for the Foxes (He had 48 appearances in 1960, but this was one of just four starts). Lehew went seven innings, scattered eight hits, struck out four, AND went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.


The Foxes are 72-45 and are pulling away from second place Sioux City in the Three-I League race. They are 8.5 games in front.

Second loss in a row for the Foxes. John Stein pitched eight innings for a complete game and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits.


The sequence happened in the eighth inning.  Tom Forrester singled in a run and was at first with no outs and the Foxes down 4-3.  Jim Markert doubled and Forrester tried to score but was thrown out at the plate.  In the bottom of the eighth Mark Higgins homered and the Indians got the win.


The Foxes are 79-45. They lead the Northern Division of the Midwest, but second place Kenosha is ten games back.  It is also noted that Appleton has a comfortable edge over Beloit (70-51) for the best record in the Midwest League.

Second walk-off loss in a row for the Foxes in Sioux City.  The Soos got a run in the bottom of the ninth on a leadoff homer by Joe Ala.

The Foxes are 71-45 on the season.  They still lead the Three-I League, but their advantage over Sioux City is down to 7-1/2 games.

Mike Bellman no-hit the Foxes until Pete Venturini doubled in the seventh inning.  The Post-Crescent story notes that Bellman had pitched back-to-back shutouts heading into the game against the Foxes.  That streak of 25 scoreless innings by Bellman was broken on an RBI single by Tom Forrester's RBI single. In the ninth, Venturini tripled and scored on a passed ball.

But, the Indians got all of the runs they needed in the second inning.  Bernardo Brito hit a three-run homer off Ken Reed.

Bellman struck out nine and didn't walk a batter in his complete game victory.  Reed took one for the team and pitched eight innings for a complete game.

The Foxes are 79-44.  They still lead the Northern Division of the Midwest League by 11 games over second place Kenosha.

Norm Bass pitched a one-hitter for the Soos. He walked five and struck out 13. The only hit he gave up was a bunt single by Pete Ward in the seventh.

Buster Narum was almost as good. He allowed four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 8-2/3 innings. But, Narum threw a wild pitch with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning to let the winning run score for Sioux City.

The Foxes are 71-44. They are in first place in the Three-I League, but the lead over Sioux City dropped down to 8-1/2 games.

Jackie Davidson walked six Foxes in the first two innings. He did not retire anyone in the second inning as the first eight Appleton batters of the inning reached safely.

Jim Markert had three RBI and Tom Forrester had two RBI for the Foxes to let Edwin Correa cruised to his twelfth win of the season.

The Foxes win made them 79-43 on the season. They are still comfortably in front of second place Kenosha in the Northern Division of the Midwest League.

The Foxes scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Then, Arne Thorsland pitched a complete game and scattered 10 hits and three walks. Oh, and he struck out 14....FOURTEEN!

The Foxes are 71-43 and 9.5 games up on Sioux City in the Three-I League.

Tony Menendez won his twelfth game of the season as he went eight innings. The five run third was all he needed. Jerry Bertolani had a two-run triple as part of the big inning.
